Subject: FTE 97up - Limited Slip axle ratio availability 1999 F250 Super Duty

I'm reading the invoice info in anticipation of placing a factory order
later this year for a 1999 F250 with standard manual drivetrain (5.4L,
5-speed 44W). If I'm reading the list correctly, I can only order a
limited slip rear axle with 4.10 gears, not with the 3.73 gears. I'd
like a limited slip, but have no desire to go to the 4.10 axle ratio in
order to get it. Anybody know why Ford is only offering limited slip in
this ratio with the 5-speed?

Got a printout today on the NASCAR Edition F-150 (order code 94N). It is
only for sale in select areas. They are the following districts: Boston,
Philadelphia, Washington, Atlanta, Memphis, Orlando, Cincinnai, Southwest,
and Los Angeles regions. So I can't sell them but if you are in one of
these areas you could get one (or you could travel to a dealer in this area
if you really wanted one). It is based of a F-150 XL 4x2 Regular cab,
styleside. It is only available in black and with a 4.6L V-8. The pictures
the sent (I haven't seen them just quoting the letter) showed a front bumper
air dam. Due to production problems this will not be on the production
trucks, instead it will have the black color keyed bumper like the STX. The
truck also features:
Chassis Performance pkg..
2" lowered chassis
Unique 3.73 axle
Specially tuned sport suspension with reduced ride height and
improved handling.
Aero Appearance pkg..
4X4 mesh grille insert with color keyed grille surround
side outlet dual tip polished stainless steel exhaust (behind

What this TSB says that if there is any problem with the 4R100 they don't
want the dealership to take anything apart. They want the complete
transmission sent in (so they can take it apart and see what caused the
problem) and they will send out a new one. This covers even minor repairs
that normally (and after June) would just have a part inside the
transmission replaced. They do this a lot with new equipment. The first
(and only) 4.6L we had a problem with (oil consumption) we had to remove and
send in. (they had a new one here before we had the old one removed).

We got this recall last night. All we can do for now is torque the lug nuts
to 100lb/ft in the specified order. In a week or two they will have
different lug nuts available that will not be as torque sensitive as these.
But before everyone get all scared, how many F-150's or Expeditions have you
seen with a wheel that's fallen off? Ford (in my opinion) adds a lot of
extra recalls to keep track of how many miles people have so the can plan on
their warranty running out. This keeps dealers from fixing problems after
the warranty runs out and saying it had fewer miles than it does. If
someone had a recall with 35,000 miles three months ago you can't very well
say that they have under 36,000 now if they have a claim. Not saying the
old way of fibbing on warranty was right (or that we ever did it) but it did
happen and it made many people happy and therefore repeat buyers.

It has to do with emissions certification. If they offered a 3.73 LS they
would have to certify they whole package it can be ordered with. (I.E. 5 spd
and auto). They only certify so many combinations so the LS 3.73 is usually
the first to get cut from the list. They plan on adding more options later
but it will take time. You will also notice the choices for California are
even less do to having to certify them differently for a small market.

On my 1989 F250 I put a screw and washer in the seam of the upper right
and left corners of the ashtray to hold it shut. (non-smoker) Then mounted
the CB to the ashtray lid. I did put a power extension in the lighter
before to run the phone and GPS. When I sell the truck I plan to use 1/4"
hex head screws with plastic caps to hide the holes left from removing the
CB.

What do i ask a dealer to try and figure out what kind of allocation he has?
Is it a specific number of vehicles? I am trying to find out which dealer in
my area (CT) would possibly have priority so i can get my truck a little
quicker. Doesthe manufacturer base allocation on the total of all vehicles
sold or specific models?

The way to tell is find the dealer who had (or sold) a lot of 1997 Heavy
Duty's. Allocation is base on each vehicle line. The way to find out is to
ask a dealer how many SD's he was allocated last week (and the week before
to be fair) and compare this to where your order would stand in line with
the others. Now I am only getting 1-2 SD's a week but I am also only taking
about that many orders so it is balancing out well for me. Some dealers
didn't sell few or any 97 HD's so they get one SD at a time and until its
delivered they don't get anything scheduled. We had this problem with
Expedition's and it is miserable. My advice is to go to a small dealer and
(don't tell them I told you this) as your last bargaining offer have them
make your truck prioritized at the best level (10) and by itself (no other
10's) This would make your truck the next one to be scheduled using their
allocation if it does not run into a shortage, and if it did you should get
it the next week. Pleas note this is true for small dealers, Big dealers
get their allocation once a month so they get a lot at once but if you order
the day after they use their allocation you have to wait a month.

If you find out your 5 gear ratios, your rear differential ratio, and the
circumference of your tires, you can compute the engine rpm at any mph.
You can derive everything else, e.g. how many minutes in an hour, how many
circumferences in a mile, how many driveshaft turns per axle turn, how many
engine revolutions per driveshaft turn, and so on.

So you could hand calculate, or use a spreadsheet and make a chart with the
information you need. Interesting educational exercise, but not the same
as having a tach.

IMHO, I would contact some tachometer manufacturers, I'd be very surprised
if you can't add an aftermarket tach.

Richard mentioned Crutchfield, they have a great catalog that not only
tells you what will fit, where it will fit, etc., they have some good basic
information on audio systems in general, including all your options for
upgrading, once you know what you have. Be sure and take a look at the
hardcopy version of their catalog, they just printed a new one. The OEM
connectors are great, it's nice to be able to wire up a harness to the back
of your new system (at your workbench or kitchen table, instead of on your
back on the floorboard), then just plug it into your truck's wiring harness
without cutting any wires.

It sounds like you have really looked into it, so you may be aware that
Crutchfield has some adapter faceplates, so does Scosche (e.g. oval
Taurus), have you checked them out? Given the size of the space in the
dash, I'm not too optimistic about finding a really well integrated
adapter, but it's worth investigating. Maybe you'll get lucky and it is
the size of 2 DIN chassis or something. Make this one more vote for
open/standard systems.
