I get >17.5 mpg average and 19.5 to 20.5 on trips. Great truck. I have the same truck except I've only got 700+ miles on it. I'm pleased with its initial quality too, except: * It has stalled 3 times and spontaneously accelerated once while going very slowly in parking lots. I'm giving it one last chance. If it does it again, I'll take it in for repair, even though it's probably too intermittent for them to fix. * Compared to a friend's identical 97 F-150 I think my engine is a LOT noisier than his when I accelerate. It's very quiet at a stable speed, but not while accelerating. He rode in my truck and agreed my engine was noisier though not "too" noisy. Maybe I should go back to the dealer and test drive a similar truck to compare with, now that I'm used to my truck? * My first 2 tanks yielded gas mileage at about 12.5 MPG. One of the tanks included 80 miles on the freeway. Why are you getting such great gas mileage? Oh, I guess I should add that I have a 3.55 axle with limited slip. Maybe you don't? Still the difference in mileage shouldn't be that great according to others' comments. I leave the fan on all the time and the A/C on about half of that time. Are you doing anything special? In your opinion, do you think the acceleration on your 4.6L auto is very "spunky"? I find that in order to get an acceleration comparable to a small car with a V4 I have to rev up to about 3000 rpm initially. Maybe that's normal? Most of the time I try not to start too fast, but now and then I need to move fast to make it into traffic. The power is there, however it seems I have to make the engine roar a little to force the engine obey. I've been trying to keep under 3000 rpm (I went up to 4000 a few times) for the first 1000 miles and most of the time that's easy to do. == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Aug 1998 22:08:53 -0500 From: Chad A Dietrich Subject: Re: FTE 97up - Quality There is a recall out on the throtle pulley and the linkage that was supposed to cause problems with the acceleration causing it to speed up or lock. I had it happen a couple of times until I took it in they said there was a recall and fixed it. Though I have not heard from ford about the recall. I want an aerodynamic/euro/sleek look instead of the stock mirrors. How about how tough they are to remove / install new ones? Also, anyone know where I can get a manual for this truck? The local stores don't carry the '97s yet.
