I used to tow my John Deere "A" tractor on a trailer with my 76 GMC 1/2 ton 250CID 6cyl, 3 speed manual & 3.4 gears. I have to admit the brakes & low gear were lacking, but the truck did not break. The local speed shop has a floor console that is designed to fit on the transmission hump in front of the bench seat on my '92 F250. It looks like it is a wood frame covered with padded vinyl. I am planning on getting one of these and mounting my CB to the left side of it so that the front panel will be pointing straight up next to my right leg. This way the controls will fall readily at hand and the front mounted speaker will be facing straight up. I can then run the wires under my driver's side floor mat to their connections under the dash. I would imagine you could do a similar setup on your new model F150. I also noticed in the owner's manual that replacing the manual transmission with an automatic results in a much higher towing capacity, ~9,000 lbs, then the rated 5,900 lbs with the 5spd. This is even with the same 3.55 gears. My guess is that perhaps the 5spd manual is somehow wimpy. But, no offense intended to your F250's automatic, I have a friend that has replaced his automatic 4spd in his ~93 F250 about 3 times. He finally put a transmission cooler on it even though the dealer never came out and said it needed one. He was hauling only a small size Lance camper without a trailer and now has about 60K miles. He says he is through with Ford. My conclusion was that, properly driven, the F350 will most likely able sustain many more trailer towing miles between transmission overhauls with the 5spd instead of the automatic. How about people: How many of you have had your automatics rebuilt with disturbingly low miles on the vehicle? My guess is lots of people have. Could it be that Ford makes more money by selling the automatic and therefore downrated the manual? On a different note: Anyone happen to know the redline of the 460CID engine? Or the RPM at which its rated 255HP occurs? - Stephen Witte San Diego, Calif. = Ford Truck Enthusiasts ============================================== Send posts to: 97up-list Send unsubscribe requests to: majordomo "unsubscribe 97up-list" in the message body. ======================================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 1998 18:09:03 -0400 From: "Gary Cochran" Subject: FTE 97up - engine speeds. I have a 98 Ranger standard cab with the 3.0L V6 and 5 speed tranny. The truck did not come with a tachometer and I haven't been able to find out how to hook one up with the EDIS system. Can anyone with a similar vehicle that does have a tach give me some guidelines on engine speed versus MPH in various gears. For instance: 1st gear at 15mph 2nd gear at 30 mph 3rd gear at 40 mph 4th gear at 55 mph 5th gear at 70 mph Thanks for any help.
