I have a '97 F-150 4X4 and your spair wheel is a plain wheel. It is not a
real wheel, by that I mean its not like your other 4 wheels. The spair does
have a full size regular tire just as the other 4 tires. Hope this helps

Subject: FTE 97up - ADMIN: Updated FAQ

The web site FAQ has been updated to include common problems
when posting to the lists and their solutions. If you use
Microsoft or Netscape email software, I strongly recommend
that you read these. If you experience a problem with posting
and you use Microsoft/Netscape email software and you have
not read the FAQ then you are on your own. Microsoft users
constitute 99% of my admin headaches because Microsoft products,
by default, attach binaries to emails.

If at any time you experience a problem posting or receive
an error message from our list server, read the FAQ.

>From this point forward, I will no longer answer questions
which are clearly covered in the FAQ. Last month my wife and
I put in 170 hours administering the lists and web site - this
is far too much for a simple "part-time" hobby.

Direct injection means the Fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion
chamber, Indirect (like GM diesel, and older Fords) has a prechamber that
gets the fuel and then it dribble into the combustion chamber. All Power
Strokes are Direct Injected

Wastegated means that the Turbo has a by pass to control the amount of boost
that is being made. This helps get rid of some of the turbo Lag that
happens when you add and intercooler.

Subject: FTE 97up - Towing with PSD and Auto

Just bought a new, brought down from Canada, 97 F250HD 4X4 extra cab,
long bed with the auto and the Power stroke.

The manual says to tow in overdrive, the wife argues to not use
overdrive, I say it depends on the load and the situation. If the
transmission is hunting I take it out of overdrive so it will not shift
up.

Who is correct?

I just gave our kids our 175,000 mile 350 Chevy truck that has had the
trans rebuilt 3 times. I want the Ford to last.

Any thoughts or actual experience out there?

Subject: FTE 97up - F150 Oil Leak

Brought my truck to the dealer yesterday. After having it for a day,
they found 3 leaks. It will be late Monday or Tuesday before it is done,
taking 2-3 days total to fix. The exact location and cause of the leaks
I do not know. The service rep said he would have all the info when the
repairs were finished, but did mention "having to remove a lot of stuff"
to get to everything. Also mentioned one of the leaks, I think, was near
the crankshaft pulley (?). I asked him how this happens on a new truck
and all he could say was that it was possibly either loosed, pinched or
missing gaskets. Anyway, I have not even had the truck 1 full month yet.
I have not even received my plates yet, nor have I even made a payment.
The truck has only 979 miles on it. I drive it to an from work only,
about 60 miles roundtrip. Is this what is meant by "Built Ford Tough"?
Sounds more like shoddy workmanship at the plant.

Subject: FTE 97up - Customer Access Circuits??

I have a '99 F350 that I would like to install a hands-free kit for my cell phone. I need access to a (+)battery supply and an (+)ignition-switched supply. I was inspecting the vehicle for access to these and I noticed four wires (red, black, blue & white) labeled "Customer Access Circuits (see Body Builder book for installation instructions)".

Does anybody know what these are? I don't have a problem getting access to (+)battery supply but the (+)ignition-switched supply is not so easy. If there is an easier way to access (+)ignition-switched I'm open for suggestions.

Subject: FTE 97up - brake light problem

I was driving along today, and I went to the car wash, applied my brake, and
the light, didn't come on... weird I thought, but I just passed it off...
then I released the brake after cleaning my truck, and then the light came
on! Ever since the light has been on... I have plenty of brake fluid, and
the ABS connector to the rear differential is fully plugged in. I have no
loss of braking power, it stops the exact same way it always did
(excellently) :), the parking brake works great as always, and releases just
fine when released. Any ideas? I am probably gonna have the dealer look at
it when I go to take it in for the lug-nuts and rear leaf springs.

I was curious if it will be possible to take the 4V heads(when
available) and add them to the older 5.4L. I have a 97 Expy and am
looking to get some more power from the motor. I have played with the
idea of boring the valves .030" over to gain some more power that way.
I know adding headers and the power chips will get me up near 280hp,
but, I figure, if I'm going that far, might as well do the job right.
I figure the heads will end up costing about $1500 for the pair.
