I may want to put a camper in it at some point, but I'm hesitant to buy the camper package, since it states that it adds a heavier spring in the rear. I will be buying a short-bed truck, and will likely be putting a soft-side camper in, with a total weight around 1500lbs. I don't believe I need the camper package to haul around this weight in this heavy-duty truck, and don't want to stiffen the unloaded ride any more than the stock 4x4 suspension. (I won't be keeping the camper in at all times). Is "camper certification" some sort of vehicle requirement from a legal standpoint for proper vehicle registration, or is it Ford's way of protecting themselves from a safety and warranty standpoint? I have a 10,500 lb permanently loaded F-350 with V-10 & 4.30 gears, it replaced an 89 W/460, 4.10 gears. It is still breaking in (2000 miles), but still has less power than the old 460. It is quite obvious that the torque is at a higher RPM. So if you expect the V-10 to pull like a 460, order a lower axel ratio. Economy is slightly better 9mpg vs 8.5mpg. The vacuum boost brakes shipped on the truck won't do a panic stop unless you wear work boots, I consider it unsafe. Diesels come W/Hydro-boost brakes. About a month ago, our maintenance superintendent brought me two strange looking parts from a '91 V6 5 speed, it turned out to be the 5th and reverse syncros, and told me that he had a price from Ford for about $850, and that it was some kind of updated kit to replace these. You would have to shut the engine off to shift into reverse. He had a printout from the Ford house and wanted to know if I could get the old parts for cheaper. I went up the street to my buddies at the transmission shop looking for a cheaper after-market part or good used piece. The shop guy recognized the part immediately and just laughed. He suggested that we go back together with it and pass the truck off on some poor unsuspecting sucker. I told him that I wouldn't be a part of that, and asked about the part, they said no dice, no after-market parts and good luck finding a good used transmission, and, in fact the price from the Ford house was excellent, and that we should go that way. Ouch! Best Regards, Robert In a message dated 9/2/98 1:07:23 PM Central Daylight Time, jmc.chartier > I have a 4.6 in my 97 XLT 4x4 5 spd. Truck bought! First, here's what we got: 1998 F-150 4x2 Regular cab, XL 139" WB Styleside, 4.6 engine, 4 speed auto, dark toreador red with medium graphite interior. Base price $16,165.00 preferred equipment package 502A $350.00 4.6 efi V8 engine $635.00 4 speed auto trans $995.00 3.55 ratio regular axle $50.00 Texas/Oklahoma/Louisiana Pkg. -$805.00 Speed control/Tilt steering wheel $385.00 Air Conditioning $805.00 Total $18,580.00 Destination and Delivery $640.00 Total before discounts $19,220.00 Option package savings - -$350.00 Sticker Price $18,870.00 Second, here's where we got it from: We got it from Stowe Ford, in Gordon, Texas for $16,450 less a $300 Rebate and about $1,500.00 in Ford Citibank credits. Stowe Ford is excellent, no haggle, no hassle. We also got excellent results from Jay Stroud, at Nichols Ford in Fort Worth, Texas. That was a private suggestion from a list member, thanks, Jay was great, he just didn't meet this price. As near as I could make out from Edmunds and Kelley, this is not much over invoice, so I couldn't get a bed liner thrown in. But we're happy we made a good deal. Third, here's what I tried: Auto-by-tel I didn't like this deal, it's just another way to call a dealer Jim Isbell Ford, an excellent suggestion, but I got just a little sucker punched with this one, due to previous experience with two Dodge dealers in Oklahoma that sell all their stock at invoice or close, I ASSUMED that Isbell is the same, and they're not. They sell ordered vehicles under invoice, not their entire stock. But it really didn't matter, they didn't have a truck close to what we were looking for. I should READ the web page a little closer, it says BUILD. I didn't try invoiceorless.com, sorry I also didn't try the out of State dealers Fourth, What is a battery saver? I'm afraid it's that plastic cover on the battery, You know the one, that thing everybody throws away when they get a replacement battery because it won't fit anymore. It's similar to what Chrysler used in the early to mid seventies. The Boss thinks it's a relay to protect the battery from deep discharge, so that if you leave the lights on, it will still start, I disagree. Fifth, Thanks again to all who made suggestions! That's what makes this list great!
