You have to buy the parts (I believe it is in a kit) and you cut out the heater box and install the filter. If you could get a 325 hp engine in your XL would you bother with a Lightning? Ford will make a bundle on the Lightning and not as much on the XL. The XL would probably go faster too. Ford is having enough trouble keeping up with the demand for 5.4L's as it is, so if every F-150 had a 5.4L... Besides you could probably put a Supercharger on a stock 5.4 for about $2500.00 and get an extra 60-80 hp so why bother with a Lightning. The service manual only calls for servicing the 4R100 every 30,000 miles regardless of use (towing). Is there anything wrong with servicing this transmission more often? 2. When changing the oil on the new Powerstroke turbo diesel, is there anyway to build up the oil pressure without starting the engine? I know to fill the replacement oil filter before installing, but the turbo and oil galleys will be basically dry until the pressure builds up. Any ideas? == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Aug 1998 09:03:12 -0400 From: John Kanyan Subject: FTE 97up - f-150 Can anyone tell me what the tow rating available is on an f-150 4x4 Thanks ...John == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Aug 1998 08:20:00 -0400 From: "Bridgman, Derek" Subject: FTE 97up - 1999 4R100 heavy duty trans cooler Does anyone know the physical size difference between the standard transmission cooler that comes on the 4R100 and the heavy duty transmission cooler that is part of the towing package? The service manual indicates a 0.6 quart difference in total fluid capacity, but I'm looking for the actual cooler dimensions. Under conditions of both vehicle overloading and severe duty use, high stress levels may develope in the rear springs that can cause the middle leaf spring assembly to break. A broken spring leaf could contact the fuel tank as it works its way out of the spring assembly. If a spring punctures the fuel tank, you may smell fuel. Should a significant amount of the fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source, there is a potential for a fire. However, there are no identified ignition sources in the spring area of the vehicle. If a spring breaks, you can lose load carrying capability and the vehicle may sag. Here is the "Repair" At no charge to you, your dealer will inspect the rear leaf springs and install spring clips. Your dealer will replace the spring assemblies if a broken spring is detected during inspection. I send this to you as my loaner car sits in the driveway while the dealer works on my rusty doors. I did call the dealer and to make sure I get my spring clips. This recall is known as "Saftey Recall 98s18", also I just wanted to give more detail to help anybody that might not have a competent dealer. Lets face not all dealers are created equal. Have a look at the Air Filtration System at http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.ford.com/showrooms/accessories/Ford/Fseries.html. This might be what your dealer was referring to. I wonder if we all have it in our F-150's. Any-one ordered this accessory? It should be, its very good. We have a '98 expedition and I installed the kit in our truck. It is a generic kit applicable to the 150/250, ex and navigator. It works very well and keeps the interior of the truck dust free. I installed ours at ~4000 miles. We have ~11000 miles now. They recommend replacing the filter at ~15000 miles. I will replace my first one at ~10 to 11K miles. If you wish to get the gory installation details let me know, I will send them to you.
