Subject: FTE 97up - Re: Body for towing

The one thing you all need to look at...I have a 99 F-350 DRW
Chassis-cab, the straight frame rail chassis that comes with this is
much larger than the F-350 DRW pickup box model. It is larger than my
89 CC. The pickup model is smaller than either, and has little 5 leaf
springs. I don't understand how both have 11,200 GVW. So, if you will
have heavy use, I suggest you get a cab-chassis & put a body on it.
Next note...Mine is a v-10 4X4 SC DRW, dealer order book & window
sticker state I get "Htdro-Boost Brakes"...I got vacuum boost brakes,
THAT DON"T WORK! They just require too much pedal pressure to stop the
truck, which is loaded to 10,500 lbs. I called Ford twice, they
referred it back to dealer, who called Ford...answer, must be missprint,
gas engines come with vacuum boost.
Is there any Federal spec on brake pedal pressure? This one takes 50
lbs foot pressure to stop at end of driveway, 70 lbs for "normal" stop
from 35 mph. Right after I got my truck, they ran out of V-10s, so very
few have been made in this configuration.
Suggestions please!

The height is real issue. The cab lights of my '93 F-250 4WD cleared the
garage by only about 1" in our old house. I would drive one to your house
before buying it just to make sure. If they don't have one, I would be happy to
measure my F350 4X4 for you. However, don't dilly-dally if you want me to
measure it. I am giving serious thought to selling it and going back to the
Dodge/Cummns package. The truck is ok but I miss the power, driveability
and economy of the Cummins engine. Having driven both, the Power Stroke
> simply comes up short.

We now live on a farm and I keep the truck in an equipment shed. It's 12' door
leaves plenty of room. Clearance is no longer an issue.

I'm not sure what towing situations are being referred to but, when towing
14,500+ lbs of 5th
wheel and with a gross weight for truck plus trailer of
21,500+ lbs, we get 10.5-10.8 mpg on the highway. Empty on the highway, 15
or more is very possible--perhaps nearly 17. We have done very little empty
driving so I can't give a good figure for that.

My neighbor just bought a new PSD. His truck is a supercab at the base trim
level. Has black bumpers and grill.

Is it my imagination or is the new PSD much quieter than previous years? He
had a 97 PSD and I could hear him coming for about 100 feet, but now he gets
to sneak up on me.

I would think a quieter diesel would be a selling point but haven't HEARD
anything about it ;=)

It had nothing to do with the Plow itself.

The Prep package was not orderable on the Supercab
but it was on the Regular and Crew Cabs.

Hello,
I work for Perimeter Ford in Atlanta, Georgia in the parts dept. The
reason you cannot order a snow plow direct from Ford is because Ford does
not
sell enough to put money into stocking and building snow plows for trucks.
Trust me your truck can definitly be equipped to have a snow plow. It is
possible to put a snow plow on almost any truck or SUV. The Ford F-Series
is
the best selling truck for 21 years running, people that produce snow plows
know this and thus it is not difficult to get one for your truck.

Very Truly Yours,
David

Glad to get some enhanced performance related information! I have a '98
F150 with the 281 c.i. (4.6L) and 3.55 that came with the towing
package. I like the mileage but could use a little more power pulling a
two horse trailer in the mountains. It weighs about 5500 with horses,
feed and tack. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

No the Super Duty does not get the low interest. I don't expect the 2000
for about a year.

The Spare
tire is optional on all SD trucks (standard on F-150/250 LD). The
price varies by what tires you have. The reason it isn't standard is that
50% of the trucks I sell the Farmers don't want the spare (won't fit
underneath with a DMI hitch).

The 1999 SD Power Stroke is Intercooled (reduces air temperatures for more
power and as a side effect slightly quieter). It also uses split shot
injectors which inject a small amount of fuel that detonates (causing the
rattle sound in a Diesel) and then injects the amount of fuel needed to
produce power after the fuel is already combusting. This softens the
knocking sound greatly. The 99's are much quitter than any other Direct
injected Light truck Diesel (though still loud).

The reason they told me the 3.73 LS is not available on a 3/4 V-10 is due to
emissions certification. I've been told it might be available in the future
but no idea when

I'm going to pick a nit here: unless the cooler is placed between a pair
of turbos, the engine is "aftercooled", not "intercooled". I know that
all the marketing hype says "intercooled" but semantically it's incorrect,
and any turbo engineer will agree.

Of course, that won't stop me from enjoying the engine, or listening to
Nathan's great contributions to this list!

No I think it is just hung over the frame for shipping and is supposed to be
mounted to the body after it is mounted. What I said earlier was wrong
(typed before thinking). I'm sure your local Metal fab sop could make a

The 3.73 were only available in the Nascar edition F-150. For 99 it will be
standard with the 5.4L Off Road to off set the taller tires.

All Nascar editions were 2wd R/C.
