Subject: FTE 97up - 97 Explorer pinging

For 1 1/2 years, I ran it on 93 octane without problem. Recently, at 35,000
miles, it has begun pinging so I took it to the dealer, who suggested I use
lower octane. I asked him twice, and he said lower octane. He said these
engines are so well tuned that anything more than 87 causes pinging. He said
it didn't ping before because I needed a tune-up, which he performed.
I also talked to the regional service rep, who said I needed to try lower
octane.
Now I've run 5 tanks of 87 through it, and it pings more and more.
Suggestions? Is there anyone at Ford I can talk to that can cut through these
stories and get it fixed?

Well after much thought and time spent here studying your posts, I
bought a '98 F150 XLT Supercab 4X4 with the 5.4L, and 4speed overdrive. I
want to thank all of you for your input and a special thanks to those of you
who responded to my questions about the size of the truck.

I'm wondering if this is what's happened to my truck order. It was supposed
to have been delivered the week of June 29th and still isn't here. The
dealer can't seem to tell me anything other than it's in a rail mixing
center and should be here any day. I can't believe they can't tell me when
the rail company has it scheduled to be put on a car and shipped.

As far as this dealer's allocation goes, they always have a lot of F150's on
their lot, maybe 25 to 30 and seem to move them through pretty quickly.

Is there a phone number at Ford that I can call to find out what's going on?
