Subject: FTE 97up - V-10 Availability & SUV Survey

Regarding the posts that have indicated a shortage/delay in getting trucks
with the V-10:

I ordered my 1999 F-350 SD, V-10, SRW, Lariat in early or mid-May and was told
it would take about 90 days. In late June I was given a delivery date of Aug
3. I checked with the dealer this week and he indicated he has not had any
delays in getting the V-10 trucks and confirmed that Ford still showed the Aug
3 delivery. (He did say that there has been a delay in getting trucks with
dual real wheels.) I'll let you know what happened a month from now.

SUV survey:

The Friends of the Earth website is running a survey on attitudes toward SUVs.
I checked it out and I don't think the results they are getting are what they
expected/hoped for. (Seems that most of the people responding think that the
safety of their families should take priority over extending the gas-guzzler
tax to cover SUVs which would make it more difficult for people to afford the
safer SUV. Imagine that. . .) It takes about two minutes to complete their
form. I think it's worth your time. The address is:

Hi Neil,

Here's what little I know about the new automatic transmissions (4r100 &
E4od)

Point 1: There was an earlier post I failed to save that went, While
crawling around under my new truck, I found a tag on the transmission that
said, if this transmission needs repair before a certain date (sorry I forgot
the date) this transmission should not be opened or repaired and should be
sent back to Ford as a complete unit and replaced with a new unit. Maybe
someone saved this post, it should be in the archives, but that's how I
remember it.

Point 2: One of the reasons I'm on this list, is that one of my coworkers
has been interested in a new 1-ton. She finally has one, a '97 crew cab
PowerStroke Automatic! Arg! I never dreamed she or her husband would buy an
automatic! They're standard drivers! Anyway, at 300 miles, Tranny goes out,
it's rebuilt and torque converter replaced. At 600 miles, Transmission goes
out again, is replaced, including torque converter. Now, at 2,200 miles, all
is well.

Point 3: There is a good transmission shop around the corner from where I
work. I have all my work done there, and they are friends of mine. While
shooting the breeze with them after work the other day, I asked about their
opinion of the new Ford autos and others. His response was that he could not
get parts for these through his normal channels and was forced to go through
local dealers. He has great difficulty getting parts even from dealers, and
has called Ford direct, trying to get parts expedited, They tell him they just
can't release some of these parts. His opinion of GM & Chrysler autos, is
that all is normal, no unusual problems that he has seen.

In my experience, I would not buy another automatic in a heavy duty
application, operated at or near Max GCVW. They draw too much power and shift
where THEY think they should be shifted.

On the limited slip question, I would recommend it. But you can't get it
with my pick of gears, 3.73, so I would go with the 4.10 gears that it is
available with.

My wife would prefer an automatic, but would drive the standard. I
prefer standard transmissions in general, but have never driven a rig

We expect to be in lots of kinds of terrain, including mountains.

I'd appreciate comments from people with the experience to give good
advice on the advantages or disadvantages of each transmission for our
kind of usage.

ALSO: on a newsgroup someone said if you get a 4x4 you should get
limited-slip differential. Comments? I've seen a list of options and
l.-s.d. doesn't seem to be one. Anyone know if that's true? >>

Subject: FTE 97up - oil burner, 99 powerstroke

Dear Group,

I have a 99 f250 crew cab diesel automatic. I drove it about 700 miles
and it started smoking and losing power, almost died unless I drove slow.
I took it asap to the nearest dealer. They said it was 8 quarts low on
oil. That means out of 14 quarts, it had six. The low oil light never
once came on. On my ranger it came on when it was a few quarts low.
Anyway they put oil in it, and suggested that the factory thought it was
a gas vs diesel, or the dealer should have caught it in dealer prep. I
took it to a different dealer than I purchased it from, because I did not
want to drive this thing across town. I drove it another 300 miles and
checked the dipstick, no oil showed up. Took it to the same dealer they
did a oil test. Took it back after checking the oil it burnt 2 quarts in
about 150 miles. They did a test, and found it was the fuel injector o
rings that were bad. Had to order them in, they gave me a case of oil in
the interim, said it would be ok to drive. I burnt 8 quarts of oil
driving 12hrs(600 miles) on a canoe trip. Then had the o rings replaced,
now after 400 miles does not appear to be burning oil. What should I do
from here? Surely some engine damage was done that will show up down the
road? What should I expect a new engine, more than the engine effected?
How should I attack so I will get what I deserve?

Also the vacuum pump was making noise the first time I took it in. I
told them when I turn the ignition, before I start the car it sounds like
a fan is running. They said it was normal. After it being there and not
being there I realized they were wrong. They have one on order now.

P.S I do not tell anyone else about these problems. I need to keep ford
with the good name!

He claimed the Invoice pricing off the net was way off and that that
pricing is what the Ford employee's pay(I forget what thats called).
Anyway, he said he couldnt even get it for that cheap. He quoted me about
$1500 over the pricing on the net. Now I dont want screw my dealer but I
dont want to get screwed either. Union Auto has always come darn close to
the net pricing so thats why I ask. I just wondered if anyone knew how
close the invoice pricing on the new really was.

When I ordered mine it was off by $300, but the dealer did make $1200 in
incentives. It showed it right there. I think $1200 for a 30,700 sale
is fair for both parties.

There's several programs, depending on your position in the corporation and
the relationship of your company to Ford.

Bull, IMHO
One thing Ford doesn't put on their web site is option prices, they claim
these are set
by the dealer, but Nathan has published list and net prices of some of these
options.

Don't worry about it, they'll never agree to a deal where they'll lose.
Just call Nathan and make a deal, you can afford air fare for a $1,500.00
savings and don't support a dealer trying to take advantage of you.

Pretty close, they may not have all the latest info, but pretty close.

So Ford now has a light that tells you you're low on oil? Is this
something new? All idiot lights I've seen only tell you when the
oil pump can no longer draw oil from the sump, which means that you're
REALLY low on oil! On your Ranger, if it was "...a few quarts low"
then you only had one or two quarts left in the pan, hardly enough
to get the pump wet, let alone lube the engine.

When I ordered my 1999 SD in April, the Edmund's price and the actual invoice were
within $5. Ford employees (and their family they share it with) can use the 'A'
plan. I had the opportunity to use it on my last truck and it saves quite a bit.
But from what I remember, it's not actually special pricing. It is invoice minus x%
or something similar. In other words, you wouldn't find A plan pricing on the net.
Maybe (and I've never seen it) the formula to get it. I'm not going to get into the
argument of what you should pay (tried it, it was kinda ugly), but I can tell you
that it is very illegal for a dealer to lie about the invoice of a vehicle.

You best protection is to try another dealer, and compare their stories.
