There are popular problems with the clutch master or slave cylinders and also the linkage from the clutch pedal to the master cyl. The slave cyl is sort of part of the throwout bearing, it is plastic and unreliable...Requires trans removal to replace, because it encircles the shaft. Next, the clutch could be bad. Otherwise you may have a tranny problem, but I run a fleet of 6 f-350s, never had a tranny prob at less than 110k mi. I set the cruise at 75MPH and let it ride -- my tach is telling me I am barely over 2100rpm. At 65MPH I am well below 2000rpm, maybe as low as 1600. Obviously you have a higher rear end ratio. With only 1250 miles on it I am seeing my milage come in at about 15-16 mpg, though at this point I don't think I can get a real picture of my milage, though this is consistent with other 99 owners I know in this area and from this list. My old diesel with E4OD and 4.10 rear runs about 2200 rpm at 65 mph. I get about 20 mpg with no load at 65 mph. This is sort of apples and oranges to compare your much more modern PSD with my old 90 7.3 with an after market turbo in a lighter F-250HD. But, you clearly are not getting even half the economy you should be getting, IMHO. Since your fuel delivery is computer controlled, the problem almost has to be in the computer. Make your dealer switch it out and see if that helps. If he can't fix it otherwise, he owes you at least that much. Have you logged onto Jason Lester's Ford Diesel Website? It has a lot of good stuff, especially on the late model PSDs. It's at www.abol.com/users/jlester/ and a lot of folks on the 97up list who have diesels contribute to the site. Good luck on resolving this problem, and please keep us informed. I'm surprised the RPMs are so high (2400) at 65 mph? I was expecting around 2000 since OD is a .72 ratio. == FTE: Unsubscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Jul 1998 09:28:39 -0700 From: Mountain Charlie Subject: FTE 97up - Ford F250SD Vs. F350SD I have been thinking of getting a new truck for towing and light off-roading (ie dirt roads that you couldn't drive a passenger car on). I have been looking mostly at the new Ford Super Duty lineup and have a couple of questions about which model to choose. Both trucks have more than enough capacity for towing and payload for my needs at the moment. Is it worth it getting the F350 over the F250? The price difference between identically equipped vehicles is less than 1K. The truck's configuration is SRW 4WD 6SP Manual Transmission 7.3l PowerStroke Diesel Engine > Camper Package Towing Package Manual Hubs with Manual Transfer Case Limited Slip Differential SuperCab 8' Bed Are there any disadvantages to choosing the F350 over the F250? Which would you chose and why? These are 99 vehicles, there will certainly be more V10s before June 99. What about V-10 power? My V-10 auto, 4.30 replaces similiar 89 F-350 with 460ci, std 5sp 4.10. One long hill that my old truck climbs in 4th gear at about 45mph (55-60 when new), requires 2nd gear in the new truck, but will then go any speed I care to rev it to, I think 4000rpm is about 55. Now that the '99s have been out for a while and people have been driving them, what are the early impressions? Has anyone had any problems with them? How is the new PowerStroke working? Is the fuel mileage good? I'm thinking about upgrading my '90 F350 and would like to get a feel for how people like the '99s. Thanks. As stated, a F250/F350 is available with 3.73 or 4.10's. I think the F550's come with 4:88 rear ends. If the original poster stated that, I don't remember seeing that point. In any case...
