Tires

We use Cooper "Discoverer R/V"
tires exclusively for replacements on our
fleet of 6 F-350s. We use 215 & 235/85R16. These are a long wearing,
high quality, low priced tire. Tread life is about 25k on our twin I beam
fronts, 50k on dual rears, or about 40k when rotated. Ford ships the
trucks with: General summer or all terrain, Firestone summer
tread...these all have only 60% of the tread life of the Cooper(this
really gives the appearance of poor quality). The Firestone all terrain
OEMs have similiar or slightly better tread life than Coopers but cost
much more at retail here. Our Cooper dealer has a road hazard warranty,
sort of unheard of for commercial use.

Hi Stephen,

This is a fairly common occurrence among "Limited Slips" regardless of
manufacturer, and may not indicate a "failure." Band-Aid approach is "lightly
setting the E-Brake" to aid limited slip action. If this is a big problem for
you, I recommend getting a real locker. Even if you break an axle, you can
still get home. A better option might be an ARB air locker, it costs more,
and is a more difficult install, but it won't affect your normal driving like
a regular locker. I took my "lock-right" out of my fairly high horsepower,
short wheel base truck because my wife refused to drive it like that. But,
with a long wheelbase, I don't believe it will cause you any problems.

Best Regards,

Robert Stout

Evidently the 'limited slip' function of the rear differential had
expired. This truck, which has only 1800 miles on it, is still under
warranty. I brought it in to my favorite mechanic today to get the
oil changed (as it was pretty black even with only 1800 miles on it)
and told him about the differential. He put it on the lift and
determined that indeed the limited slip function was probably gone. >>

On my 99 F-350, can I screw a business radio to the ceiling? Cannot
look in through the clearance lights, they seem glued on.....
