Please follow the directions each of you received when you joined. Everyone is emailed a copy of our FAQ, charter and a brief intro/help message.
Posting unsubscribes to the list really wastes my time as I already spent 1 hour each night administering the list and don't have a chance to participate as much as I'd like to.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the reply and info.

It's funny how I was feeling 'buyers remorse' after just doing a deposit, I started second guessing my choice right away. Thanks for the vote. As funny also, is how other factors will dictate a choice. Mrs Z says no way gonna pay more for something with twice as many miles. I could keep shopping for gas but I really want to dive into diesel! So be it. I've been doing parking lot interviews, for the last 6 months, w/ F-250/350 gas and diesel owners said, 'didn't notice mpg difference under load' IE No Problem! But all diesel's said better mpg and wouldn't go back to gas.

The guy I'm buying from seems to know diesel, let me run some of his teaching by ya all. He swears by additives, worth 10% increase in mileage.
(16.8 mpg in a trip from Denver to Calif and back) In house secret at Ford is change the oil religiously every 2500 miles for the 7.3, which he says has been done. Also do not use penzoil oil nor Total brand name diesel.

What else; He says keep it between 2 to 3000 rpm and if smoke shows in the mirror 'that's wasted power, aka, Money'.

As to towing w/ a 5spd, I'll upgrade to an auto when times are better, as a RV trailer would justify. I guess this is my intro to RV'ing.

Speaking of 460's laying around, I have a new rebuilt (less than a 1000) in a '63 F-600 stake bed, out back. Fired up twice a year last 3 years since I got it. What's a 460 worth? Paid $1000 for the F-600 w/ the rebuilt.

Thanks in advance for your replies!
Zeb

This is a hard choice. I personally went with the diesel. Here is why, the 460 is a great motor I have one on the stand just do not know what to do with it.
It sucks down fuel. If you are planning on towing with it get ready to feed it. I had on in a older F350 and it got about 4-6 miles per gallon. Any motor with 195K on it is tiered and could use some refreshing. I would stay awy from buing something that already has problems you are just asking for headachs. I do not think that body rot is as bad as a trans problem. Also that 5spd is going to get old fast. IF you are pulling something I would get a auto. The diesel is an all out workhorse. Why do you think they are used in the big rigs? The only thing I do not like, is the fact that if not treated right diesel fuel turns to gel in the winter. I use mine for work. It pulls trailers over the recomened weight a lot. I also use to snow plow, My other truck F150 w/351ci plows also but it sucks fuel. With the F350(1996) I can go about 20 to 30 hours with out filling up the F150 (great little truck) only goes about half that. You should still be able to get another 100K out of that diesel, Well I hope that helps and good luck. Let us know what you picked. OH, by the way I would go for the diesel. Both should be good trucks. SCOTT MUMMERY

The only thing I can say is buy buy buy. I have an 1996 F350 Crewcab 4X4 w/ 8' bed. I also have the 7.3L engine. I use mine for farm work, hauling my boat, and snow plowing. It now gets used more than my F150 4x4. The diesel uses somuch less fuel than the 351 in the F150. The 460 in the one tons are gas hoggs. I think that you will be very happy with it.

SUBJECT: F350 questions

Hello

I am currently in the search for a tow vehicle to tow my 82 Scrambler,
double axle trailer and gear. I was using a 95 cherokee and a tow
dolly all of the time, but I have had ebough.

I have spotted a 97 F350 4x4 regular cab with automatic, 5.8, air, off
road and camper packages, manual hubs, and 4.10 gears. It was a
special order but the guy backed out at the last minute. I was
wondering how that truck would do in every day driving and when
towing.

I have been reading a lot of threads on the diesels here, and I am now
curious. I live in a neighborhood where the your neighbor is right on
top of you. I know that my friend's Dodge turbo diesel is noisy, and
I was wondering how the Ford diesels are. I can see moving the truck
out of the way every morning at 4:45 am and waking up the whole
neighborhood.

So here are my questions. I definitely want four wheel drive, but
should I be looking at that F350 seriously, or would I regret it
later? I also do not want a 460 due to every day gas mileage. I would
probably be towing about 12 times per year, and total trailer + Jeep =
6500 pounds. I can have the dealer do a search and find a truck, but
should I go for the 351 F350, or should I have a search done and get
the diesel in F250 or F350 versions.

Sorry for the length and amount of questions, but it is getting close
to a time where I need a tow vehicle ASAP, and I do not want to buy
something I am going to regret in 6 months.

Thanks

I didn't like it at first (thought it was too dramatic a switch from the conventional truck), but I must admit it has grown on me to the point where I think it looks pretty sharp. When you see them driving down the road, chrome gleaming in the sun, they make quite an impression--and still look muscular and aggressive.

Has anybody got any tips they can share about replacing valve cover gaskets, particularly, which material makes the best gaskets? I have to replace the valve cover gaskets on my vehicles every fall. I am sure it has something to do with the AZ Summers.

Thanks !

Its just you...I heard that when they first come out but they are selling well and I would like to trade my splash in on a 97 f-150 stepside...I think it is one of the best looking trucks ever made!

Anybody know of any good products or techniques to remove minor brush scratches from clearcoat? Took the old man's Toyota out for a romp on the weekend and, as it's a brand new truck, would like to return it to him as unblemished as possible. None of the scratches are serious...just the little white lines that show up mostly in the sun.

I don't know..I have some trouble with it too, though I think it looks pretty good as a short bed or a stepside, just not as a long bed. With the
long bed there's just too many contradictory angles happening with the design.
A vehicle in my opinion should look like it's all moving in one direction,
and the F-150 doesn't seem to know if it wants to be a Ford Probe or a pickup
truck.

I think that ford should have echoed the Ranger design (like D***e did with the Dakota/Ram) instead of going with the present body style. Just my personal taste
& opinion, though.
