I am on clutch number 3 with only 62K miles on the truck. Now the slave cylinder / throw out bearing is going bad (I can't reverse w/o grinding gears). The second clutch was a Centerforce DF II (I can't kill them in my 302 Mustang) it lasted about 28K. I have replaced master cylinder, clutch, pressure plate, and resurfaced flywheel. Am I the only person who is having problems with Ford's funky hydraulic setup or is this problem more widespread. Since the slave cylinder is plastic I wonder if anyone manufactures a better replacement? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 97 03:03:29 UT From: "DAVID MUMMERY" To: fordtrucks80up Subject: RE: tranny probs on 91 ranger? Just bought a 91 Ranger XLT 4x2, 4sp auto, 92k, my first American vehicle :). It's in pretty good shape as it was a fleet vehicle, but I am having a weird problem... When you put the truck in gear, it sometimes does nothing as if it were in neutral - step on the gas, rev rev rev and nothing until...CLUNK, SKREECH, she takes off peeling out. Come up to the first light, stop. Light goes green and nothing, same symptom. Until today it only did it in forward, today it also did it in reverse. Does this sound familiar? Could be as simple as a tranny service right? A local shop suggested that it might need a new filter, or maybe they put the wrong filter on, or maybe the orings are ripped and it is sucking air. Thoughts, comments? Hello all, Newbie here, with a Newbie question. I've got a '91 4 door Explorer, and want to improve the ride of the thing. It's auwfull, my '83 F150 rides substantially better. Anyhow, I also hate the fact that my old Audi Quattro had more ground clearance, so I'm looking at different lift options for it. I've found a 2 inch kit and a 4 inch kit from Rancho, TrailMaster, and Superlift that I'd like some Been There, Done That type of info about. Anyone with a '91-'94 Explorer that's tried any of those lifts? Waddayathink? Simply because of their reputation, I'm kinda leaning towards the 4 inch SoftRide system, but I'd like to hear what some of the pro's say. I don't trust sales droids in this type of scenario! I only want to clear 31's, so I'd guess either the 2 or the 4 inch would do fine. Once this condition starts, it seems if the truck continues in a harmonic bounce for a distance and if another bump in the road is encounter before the truck smoothes out, the harmonic bouncing becomes worse and makes for an jarring ride for passengers in the back seat and an uncomfortable ride for the passengers in the front seat. The truck had 2 passengers in front and 1 in back with about 200lbs of cargo. The truck was factory ordered and received on July 2nd. I suspect the problem to be caused by poor shocks absorbers used with stiff rear springs. I have also been told to install "Velvet Ride" shackles on the rear springs in addition to replacing the shocks which would fix the problem and smooth out the ride. I was using 5W-30 weight (Quaker State), which due to it's thinness flows better on start up than a thicker oil. I was also told that a thicker oil might clog up in the tighter tolerance engines being produced now, which seems fairly reasonable, at least for a rumor. Anyway, when I switched to Mobil One 5W-30 (fully synthetic) it went away completely. A related question. Is the 1997 4.0L in the Ranger really a SOHC? I added MOA to the first oil change and Dura Lube to the second one, no effect, imo. Then yesterday I added a bottle of Rislone Ring Seal and within a mile it quit smoking except for an occasional puff. Today, after 50 miles of observation, I added another bottle (15 oz) and it's fine now (another 50 miles of observation, city and highway again), ever so faint still occasionally, but most will not notice it. And mpq are improving! Now I am wrestling with the 'Should I sell quick and try again, a bit wiser' question. ?? A fair enough truck, solid otherwise. After leaving my truck sit at any airport lot for a couple of days (it was supposed to have been a typical humid and hot St. Louis weekend), I noticed I had an odor, not really like moldy bread or something, but pretty musty or stale anyway. It was much worse when just the top vents were on and was drawing in from the cowl, it went away when the A/C was on (no difference if on regular or MAX) and it didn't seem worse with hot or cold settings. I ended up turning on the MAX A/C to get the system to draw in air from under the dash and spray Lysol into the intake a couple of times. I think I got the problem (and made the truck smell springtime fresh), but just kinda wish I knew the exact conditions that caused it to begin. I mentioned it to the dealer, he wasn't 100%, but he thought he might have remembered of a TSB on it.
