I notice you mention a catalogue and a manual for putting a 302 in a Ranger. I gave a 1994 Splash (Ranger) and have been looking into what it would cost to put a 5.0L in it. Could you please directme to where you got the catalogue? Anything would help, Web site, emauil address, phone # etc. Also could you send me the Name of the book and the author, and the ISBN inside the front cover so that I may order one from my local book Store? I would really appreciate any help. I know it will be VERY expensive, but I have not been able to find the information I need locally to even begin constructing a parts list, I live in a small town in PA. Thank you, -Michael Craig. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Jul 1997 08:43:01 -0500 From: "Beaman, James" To: "'fordtrucks80up Subject: '92 F250 Fuel Mileage Ramblings Message-id: Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Well, lately I have started closely monitoring my fuel mileage on my '92 F-250. It is a supercab longbed, 5.8L EFI, E4OD, with a 3.55 rear end. The initial highway mileage was 16.5 at 65 mph with normal A/C on. Since I had not checked the timing since I got it, I did this and found out that it was about 2 degrees off so I corrected this. The next time I was on the highway, mileage under the same conditions had risen to 17.9 mpg. Right after that, I installed a bug shield (just a cheap one from Wal-mart to keep rocks from chipping the hood paint) and mileage is now pretty close to 17. So the extra drag dropped the mileage almost one full mpg. Recently, my wife got a few bottles of an additive marketed as "fuel enhancer" whose only listed ingredient is ethanol. They claim that the addition of 6 oz. of this to a tank of gas will improve power and mileage while reducing emissions. My question is, can anyone think of any way this quantity of ethanol can harm my engine. Another claim is that this additive has been used industrially. If nobody can think of any harmful effects, I may give it a try and report back on its effect on my mileage. Further steps toward improving the mileage will be checking the engine codes, improvements to the ignition, and improvements to the exhaust further down the road. I would go with even a 3.50 gear set for towing. You didn't say what you will be towing or what type of terrain you will be towing it over. The lower gearing will give you easier starts when towing and reduce the amount of clutch workneeded when going from a dead stop. -- Don Grossman duckdon It's hard to do 90 on a speed limit budget....... 63 Ford F-250 4x4 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Apr 1996 18:32:38 -0700 From: "J. Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Let's see if I can't kill two birds w/one stone here... ;) I finally brought the Advance Adaptors catalog and "installation manual" to work today... To Mr. Brent Pederson and Mr. Mike Craig (and the list;): The catalog and installation manual I have is from Advance Adaptors. Their URL is http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.advanceadapters.com/ E-mail addie: aadapters Snail Mail Addie: Advance Adaptors, Inc. P.O. Box 247 Santa Bella, Paso Robles, CA 93447 Phone No: (800) 350-2223 (805) 238-7000 I have their catalog, which, i think, was free for the asking. But, the "installation manual" costs $10.00 US. The installation manual isn't really very much help--it lists some info tables, thier p/n's for the conversion kits, info on modifications necessary (DEFINATELY not enough detail, IMO, to be called an "inst manual"), and other info pertinent to swaps. I would think, that if I did indeed spring for the V-8 conversion kit, it would take me considerably longer than a Saturday. The mods necessary to fit a V8 in the chassis don't seem to be feasibly squeezed into one Saturday's-worth of honest labor. It would take me AT LEAST, a couple of weeks, to find all the suitable parts and to figure out all of the quirks and quacks. I don't mean to discourage you, only to relay what I have found/heard from people who have done it. SURE, it's tons 'o fun once you get it in, but there is SO much work that goes into 'dropping' a 302 in one of these, that my final decision was to just forget it, because of the time/money/headache hassle involved. It is NOT a simple swap. There are fitment problems with the valve covers (req mod's to heater/AC box), steering joint interference, oil filter relocation, slight firewall mods (just some pinging with, as they say, a "3lb sledge hammer";), radiator upgrades (that's a gimme!), driveline upgrades, etc. Yes, it's been done before! but...everybody I've talked too who has done the conversion say that they wouldn't do it again. As far your '94 Splash is concerned, mike...down here it'd be illegal, with regards to emissions, unless you used a '94-'95 5.0. As you probably know, the 4.6L was introduced ('96, i think? someone?) as the base GT motor. It's a bit wider than the 'old' 5.0, too...We (Houston) have emissions testing, and i've HEARD, not read, that it's OK, though, if you retain the COMPLETE emissions system from the year model of the engine--the year model of the donor engine must be same as/or newer than the model year of your truck. It may be OK for you, if you don't have emissions testing/close checking. You could probably stick a carbed small block in there, with alot less hassle. MIND YOU, I was only concerned about a EFI 5.0L, which would be legal for where I live. KUDO's do ya, if you don't have the emissions hassle!! ;) Sorry, didn't mean to damp your spirits, and hope I didn't. It's surely feasible, no doubt, but it may not be worth the time and money, especailly if you figure on selling it. What did I end up doing? The next best thing to dropping in at least a V6...i'm currently looking to swap in a turbo setup from a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. It's also a 4cyl, and it _should_ fit OK, with minimal fitment problems. Cross your fingers!! Hey, guys...where there's a will, there's a WAY! If you have ANY questions, or comments, feel free to let me know!! Even though your milage sounds to be on track there might be a hold up there. One thing to add if you do not have one already is a bed cover. It is worth about 15-20% better milage. Also give a K&N filter a try. It gave me an additional 2 mpg. That my not sound like a lot but all you are going to get are small additions. So far I've decide to do a K&N filter and box, larger throttle body, probably a new intake manifold, and a larger cat back exhaust system with a crossover in front of the mufflers (Prolly Flow master, I'm hopin they aren't to loud). I might look into one of those multifire ignition systems. Anyone done any of these things? How did it turn out? But, a co-worker's '93 Ranger passenger side got stuck down. We took the door apart and found that the motor was getting the right voltage, so we figured the motor died. When he took it to the mechanic, he said the motor was fine, but the window was just stuck because it went down beyond the regular down position. He just pulled the window back up to it's proper spot and it has worked fine since. I'd a figured there should be a stop or something to keep it from going that far, but he didn't think to ask if it broke or was gone or what when he picked it up.
