Yes, those were trim packages. So in actuality, a "250 Ranger" would really be an F-250 Ranger. The Ranger trim package was dropped and the XLT trim package replaced it. The Explorer trim package was sort of a notch between XL and XLT. It was offered on the full size as well as small size trucks. In 1984 (mid year) you could actually order a "Ranger Explorer"! You'll find a few full size Rangers on the >web site. Yo Casey, Ken, et al: As far as I know, the Ranger nameplate was used on F-trucks from 1967 to 1981. In 1983, the smaller-size Ranger pickup appeared. Ranger may have been a trim level prior to 1967, but I don't think the trucks actually carried that name as a label then. The earliest Ranger labels I have seen are on 1967s. The most recent Ranger full-size I have seen is a 1981. (I'm thinking of buying a 1981 F350 Ranger 4x4.) The snake oil salesman claimed to have a 1987 Ranger 250. To me, this looked suspiciously like something that might be claimed by someone unfamiliar w/ Ford trucks. On the other hand, it may have been an innocent typo, perhaps he meant 1978, which would be a valid year for a Ranger F250. Dave R.
