Hi, I have an Explorer with the old 302 5.0L V8 and I like to have the engine to run smoother like an Lincoln. I know that Ford used the same engine for the last 30 years or so in the luxury sedans and other vehicles. Is there a way that I can replace the push-rod lifter with overhead cam like the ones on the newer trucks like the 4.6L and the 5.4L? I hate hear the engine to sound like a bus chugging all the time. I thought of putting in the synthetic oil, but I'm not sure. The engine have about 1200 miles on it and it is a 1998 model year. Oh, can I install more dampers or something to smooth out the steering wheel buzzing vibration? I like the engine, it is smooth, but at idle, the engine is driving me crazy. I guess that I'm used to driving the four cylinders engines. My Explorer is my first car with an V8. Thank You. Sincerely, Shane A. Bul, you must be really new. I had considered doing the same thing you are, but after reading seemingly hundreds (not really, though) of posts on here trashing Fords' 3sp w/OD trannies, I've decided to stick w/the more bulletproof, but less highway fuel effecient C-6 that I have now. Many ppl have complained about both the E4OD and the AOD trannies that you are talking about switching to. I'm sure they'll be happy to tell you about their experiences.... Its what gives them their distinctive (great) sound. As to the steering wheel vibration, what type of vibration? High pitched buzz or a slow rumble/rattle? Oh, all the drawbacks are worth it when you stomp the gas. By the way, do you know we have a discussion group specifically for Explorers, Rangers and Bronco IIs? Let me know it you want to be on it (any one else here too). I will respect the opinions of the list members regarding this matter, just like I have with all other past votes. Your opinion, for or against this issue will not hurt my feelings. Anyways... the issue: Last week, a vendor approached me (via email) and asked about advertising in the digest version of the lists. The ads they are requesting would not appear on the live lists but at the top of each digest just below the table of contents. As an example: " - --------------------- [ Sponsor's Message ] ------------------ Foobar Ford Performance Products is pleased to announce the addition of new roller cams for 302 V8s. These cams, when combined with Foobar's push-rods and valve trains offer higher horsepower and torque. For more information, visit Foobar at: http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.foobar.com When ordering, state you saw their sponsorship message for a 5% discount. - -------------------------------------------------------------" The ads, like the example, would be simple and to the point. Neither would I personally promote the products. I really need feedback on this. To post your opinions on the matter, send an email to fordtrucks forward all the messages to the all the lists. Again, do **NOT** send your opinions to the list, send them to fordtrucks the posts to all the lists since this affects all of them. Your emails should appear on all the lists within 24 hours of sending them. Also, when replying to opinions on this, send the replies to: fordtrucks If members feel this issue may be appropriate I'll put a voting form on the web site. If the members are overwhelmingly against it then it will not be voted on. This would also mean that I would revise the charter to allow this. Since the beginning, I've maintained that our lists would be free from vendor influence. Its up to the list members to decide if a sponsorship message of this type is considered influence. We're about to get more window stickers printed (we have 4 left) and we'll soon get estimates for T-shirts so the advertising money would help. However, we're aren't hurting either. Your opinions concerning this matter are welcome. Lastly, as an option on the voting form (if we end up needing one) we could state that we would do a trial run to see how it works. Hi Have 3/4 of a million miles under my belt in New England weather of all kinds, and have long wanted to install a limited slip in several of the vehicles driven. Have driven only a few vehicles with it and found if you keep your right foot under control you benefit noticeably from limited-slip. I believe that in four of the 6 times I had to have help getting un-stuck, limited-slip in my 4x4 would have prevented my getting in to deep in the first place. Be aware it requires a bit of additional care and maintenance to work properly over the years. (Changing the differential oil and possible adjustments as recommended). ....
