I have found a great sight for tranny info (great info on how shift kits can help or hurt your tranny and other great articles)!! I have noticed a large amount of complaints with your auto trannies...this is the sight to see. The address is thegrid.net/thedrivetrainpage As for my previous post to find out more about a transfer case swap idea (13-54 to 13-56) I was told I should stay with my 13-54 as the 13-56 has an internal flaw that could cause pump failure after 70,000 to 90,000 miles (even in 2wd!). My source also said that he was unable to determine if my electronic hookups would "talk to one another" in this application. I originally wanted to do the swap to get the lower low range gearing of the 13-56 and maybe an overall stronger case, but know I think I will just go through my case, give it a clean bill of health and leave well enough alone! No sense inviting trouble! Hope you all like the sight, Bryan Keep the shiny side up! ______________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Jan 1998 11:53:17 -0500 From: Jason Lester Subject: Re: Gas vs. Diesel The reason they don't recommend it is that the diesel trucks are already close to their maximum weight capacity of the front end when stock. The diesel engine weighs much more than the gas engines. You could probably do it if you put heavier springs on the front, but you might exceed the front axle's weight rating. Mine weighs 4400 lbs on the front end. Jason >I've tried to get the answer gas vs diesel w/ a snow plow and have been >unsucessful to date. Any help will be >greatly appreciated! > >Bryan. Remember guys, Keep the shiny side up! Bryan, As far as 13-54 to 13-56 mechanical changes, I don't know, but am interested just like you. But, as far as transfer case electronic controls, I think I can help there. On the '97 Ranger, the transfer case is controlled by the GEM, the generic electronic module, based on the input from the vehicle speed sensor, shift position sensor on the xfer case and the switch control system (for the switch itself). The GEM is a box that controls a lot of things besides the xfer case. I know it turns on and off the dome lamp on mine (it has a battery saver that shuts it off after 25 min if it's left on), the antilock brakes and the cruise control. I am not sure everything it does, but suffice to say it more than just the 4wd system. This is on the '97, so it may or may not be applicable to all years. Also, to say this is seperate from the main computer is relative, there is the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), which controls the engine functions and the transmission, but this and GEM are tied together. But other than the position sensor on the xfer case itself, the GEM doesn't know what kind of case is there. There really isn't a main computer that controls everything, but smaller systems that feed information to one another and act on that based on their programmed parameters. Hope this is some help. It was a 92' like mine with the same blacked-out body, minus the larger tires, but the surprise came when I looked into the cab. The truck had a 5-spd and a manual transfer case, not the auto trans and shift-on-the-fly t-case that I thought they all had. It was also the only other std cab longbed, other than mine, that I have ever seen. So far I have seen Broncos, Stepsides, Shortbeds, And of course, longbeds. I have yet to see an x-cab truck with the "Nite" package. If any one else has any more info, please let me know.
