They recommend BFG/MT's as they are 8 ply and can > handle > the weight better. I have the tire sizes and capacities for the swamper line of tires, and your tire dealers are correct to a point. WRT tires that will fit a stock F250 w/Diesel, all the Swampers are marginal. If you're running unloaded, or with a minimum load, they may work, but with little margine for underinflation. All bets are off when you start carrying larger loads. You need a Load Range D or E tire for your truck. I'm running BFG Mud Terrains in the 255x85x16 size on my F350 Diesel. They have the capacity needed to handle the weight of the truck and a load, and they don't require any suspension modification on my rig. They are a tall tire (33" plus) and not very wide, so steering and handling remain pretty much stuck. Dunlop also makes a Mud Terrain in this size, but there are many companies that produce a mud tire in the 235x85xz16 size that's standard on your truck. - -- SCB belinkoff ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Mar 1998 09:21 -0500 (EST) From: Michael_Skerrett Subject: One more Explorer comment My first Ford truck was a '72 Explorer 1/2 ton standard cab. It was one of the best vehicles I ever owned and drove it past 200K miles until I traded it for an '86 F-150. It had a 351W and C4 transmission and no matter how foul the weather or how bad I treated it, every time I turned the key it started and got me where I needed to go. I did not like the fuel tank in the cab though. I guess the engineers couldn't think of anywhere else to put it then (or the Feds hadn't regulated it yet). My Explorer had unique wheel covers, upgraded interior and exterior trim and standard air conditioning (usually an option back then). There was a chrome Explorer badge on the back of the truck bed and an Explorer hood ornament. I paid a whopping $4,500 for it new. This was a really nice way to find out how good Ford trucks are. I've been buying them ever since. If it is hauling or pulling loads, then the swampers may not be the best tire. If you do a lot of off-roading in the loose/muddy stuff, then the swampers would be good. If you do some of both, then I recommend the BFG Mud TAs. I have them on my 86 F250 Ext. Cab 4x4 and I think they perform well and look good. In general aggressive tread types will not perform very well on wet pavement. If you have to deal with wet or icy roads, then something like the BFG All Terrain would be the best bet. They neary touched the bumper (untrimmed bumper, unloaded truck). So I went with a Commanche 30x9.50x15 set of all terrain radials. I didn't get much upgrade in size, but was able to get a 6 ply tire instead of a 4 ply passenger tires. I had good service from the factory Firestone ATXs, but I got too many flats on gravels roads from rock bruises. I do lots of highway driving in all conditions from 110 degree heat to ice and snow, and I also do extreme off road hill climbing when I deer hunt in Montana each fall. I have been stuck with the all terrain tires, but that will happen with any tire when you lose your senses and drive through that one big bog you shouldn't have. It's too early to comment on th eservice from the Commanche tires, but my dealer recommended them. I have been dealing with him for 10 years and he backs his products 100%. Free flat repair, balancing, rotation, road hazard, etc. for life of tire so I don't think he'd steer me wrong.
