The problem was, when we asked new subscribers what year their trucks were, only about 1 or 2 % were pre-1994 trucks. :-( Even asking around on the newsgroups there wasn't a lot of call for those. I think your best bet may be to try the ramlist and ask on there. They've gotten so big that there has to be SOMEONE that can help you there. Amazingly, the exhaust system is original on this truck after 8 years and 94K miles. The muffler is showing some rust holes along the seam and sure enough when I shook and banged the muffler with my fist I could hear a loose baffle inside. From past experience I agree with Mike that such noises can be heard far away from the source. I'll have to replace this muffler before next state inspection and I bet this noise will go away. Thanks Mike. Some where in the future i hope to change my 302 engine that has approximately 290k on it, to a new larger engine. My question is: Am i better of with something that has EFI or is the old fashioned carberated systems better. Also my bronco comes from the factory with a limited slip rear end that i am not sure if i should change during my rebuild project. I have been reading some articles on the air locking sytems. Is this the way to go or are there better ways. The important thing for me is that i want to have a good off road truck that i can depend on but still be able to drive to work every day comfortable. I don't really know a lot about trucks so any help that i could get through out my project would be extremely appreciated. Thank again Bronco Bustin todd_johnston ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 09:04:52, -0500 From: KNBD87D Subject: Re: Saleen Explorer Saleen Explorer is can of whoop a*s. Three engine choices: the 4.0 SOHC, the 5.0L, and a supercharged 5.0L! I think it has 18" wheels, fat tires, upgraded brakes, and of course, upgraded suspension. Sweet looking air dam, ground effects, and real nice interior treatment. Saleen makes Mustang's fast as hell, and he makes explorers fast as hell. Actually he really beefs up the suspension, so the Explorer will handle very well. The Saleen Mustangs were 5.0 cars modified brand-new with 5 lug wheels, roll cages, additional structural supports, suspension mods, with the 5.0s warmed up.Their "claim to fame" AFAIK was that you could drive one of these off the Ford Dealership lot(the only place you could get them) and go racing! Just one more note on the Ford Tremor; you can find it at the Popular Mechanix website. It is featured there with other experimental vehicles from C%*#y & D*# question of whether or not an SUV can perform safely meant to compete with formula sports cars.It is that it will get to 140mph at all! I'd love to have a Tremor for the weekend. When I got into the truck this morning it got off to a bad start. This is common when it is cold. Normally I have to nurse the throttle to keep her awake until she warms up a bit and can idle on her own without stalling. This morning she wanted to stall, as usual, but I when I went to feather the gas the engine bogged every time I blipped the throttle. It was almost like a clogged fuel filter or empty gas tank or something. Once it warmed up it ran fine, though. Also, maybe an unrelated problem, when the engine is cold the idle surges up and down until it warms up like a vaccuum leak except the problem completely goes away when the engine is warm. Anyone seen this before? - -- Chris Hedemark - chris "From the fury of the Norsemen, oh Lord, deliver us!" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 10:11:37 -0500 From: "Harold Day" Subject: RE: Startup trouble I've seen this behavior in a carburated truck, (mine) and it was a power valve on the carb that was messed up. I also had a EFI truck that started acting this way when warm and it was a plugged cat... That's probably not much help. Sorry. Are you saying that your EFI truck did this, and when you changed the cats it was fine again? My truck doesn't have the rotten egg smell typical of a bad cat. But are there any other symptoms if it is bad? - -- Chris Hedemark - chris "From the fury of the Norsemen, oh Lord, deliver us!" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Apr 1998 10:41:09 -0500 From: "Harold Day" Subject: RE: Startup trouble > Are you saying that your EFI truck did this, and when you changed the > cats it was fine again? > > My truck doesn't have the rotten egg smell typical of a bad cat. But > are there any other symptoms if it is bad? Mine didn't have the rotten egg smell either. Again, this behavior was when the truck was warm, not cold. In my current truck it had to do with a bad power valve on the carb. Maybe something relates to that on the EFI? I'm not sure. With the cats it behaved this way only when warm. I couldn't figure it out, so I took it to the dealer, they determined that it was a cat problem. After they changed it out I had no more problems.
