All other things being equal and right, if you put in more fuel to a diesel, you get more power out (under a constant load, you get higher RPMs). To get the black exhaust you are experiencing, you might be having an injector timing problem. Something to check. Either the oil is low or you need to change to a different brand of oil. I personallly use Castrol GTX for both my Fords, but a lot of people like Mobil 1. Its your preference. But yes, a vehicle should be broken in and stayed with only one brand of oil. There is a page here on the truck list(if you havn't seen it) that tells you everything you want to know about which weight, brand, and viscosity should be right for your truck. Then it usually takes lots of pedal to kick it down. Around town it tends to shift into OD a lot. I usually turn off the OD in these situations (which I think Ford recommends anyway). I find it also takes lots of pedal to get it to downshift on a hill. And until it does, it's got not power at all. Drives me nuts on the numerous hills in our area. We settled for the auto because we wanted a late model Bronco but couldn't find one with the manual. Based on this purchase, I'll never own a truck with an automatic again (of course just my opinion). You've covered the air filter which would have been one of my first guesses. You can lean the mixture by just backing out on the go pedal a bit. Much easier than readjusting the pump. Diesels pump a constant air volume and power is controlled by changing fuel amount. Too rich is a bit of a misnomer until you get to the point where you don't have enough oxygen to burn all the fuel at full throttle. My diagnosis is your timing is incorrect. Diesels are surprisingly sensitive to injection timing. Jason's page is a good source of info. He just put up a new page for older Ford diesels. I just recently purchased an 88 bronco xlt full size and i was wondering if anyone might have some good rebuilding tips. This is my first 4x4 i have owned but it has always been a dream of mine to get involved in the sport. I feel i have a perfect project truck to do the job. My overall intentions are to build a strong trail truck with a nice lift. If anyone has any advice for me i would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone is in the ontario region or at least knows of any clubs, magazines or parts places in the area that would very helpfull as well. Yo Dave: This is just my opinion, but I have seen several engine conversions, including diesel-to-gas and gas-to-diesel. To do this right, it would be a major undertaking and very expensive. I'd expect it to cost between $8K to $12K for a decent professional job. Anything less and you'd be looking at interminable headaches from all the odds & ends that could go wrong w/ such a major conversion. I'm not sure there would be any possible financial justification for this; you'd never break even on the fuel cost savings, and routine maintenance costs for the diesel are more expensive than for a gasoline engine. As new as your truck is, w/ as few miles as it has, it should have a pretty good resale value. I'd think the best option (if you really want a diesel truck) would be to sell your current truck and buy a diesel truck. I'd bet the cost difference between a diesel truck and what you could sell your current truck for would not be out of line w/ the conversion costs, and you would have the peace of mind of knowing that the diesel truck was built properly from the beginning. It's the one that comes with the "heavy duty" towing package and has a HUGE round black connector that mounts to the rear bumper and plugs into two connectors located on the left side of the frame. I am willing to buy it even if the large connector on the end that mounts to the bumper is removed. I purchased my truck used and it did not have this connector.
