Alan, my old mailing list buddy, I have some advice for ya....
Find a new mechanic! Any fool who tries to find slop in a U-joint while
the driveline is under load is not a mechanic that I would trust to fix
the problem that YOU had to find for him.....

Discount Auto Parts if you have one nearby.I had the same trouble with my 96

Little bit of humor here, I went to the local Chevron station and asked
for a rough estimate on repacking the front wheel berings and the hubs and
the guy quoted me at 2 hours work, and and a total cost of about $165.00.
I have never had this done before, so I am not sure if that is reasonable
or not, and them I went to the Ford dealer and asked for the same quote.
He quotes me for FIVE hours labor and a total cost of $300.00! I am just
amazed at how much we get ripped off on this island. I have a friend in
Juneau (Alaska) who owns a small service shop. He would the job, (for
anybody, not only friends) for $85.00. Guess I will be packing my wheel
berings this time..

Hot sellers go up in price, indeed!! Does anyone remember when Mazda
came out w/the Miatas? Or Dodge w/the Viper? People will pay anything
to be the first guy in town to own something like this. I remember
reading about people paying up to $60,000 to buy a Miata, for crying out
loud!!! Or how about John Elway paying $175,000 for his Dodge Viper,
even though it stickered for $55,000!!! These are extreme cases indeed
and are a clear case of limited supply and very high demand. BUT, even
when these mfgs. had enough vehicles to satisfy the public, there was
almost NEVER any price dickering on the sticker. They KNEW that if you
didn't buy it for what they wanted, tomorrow someone would come in and
they would. It just comes down to education. We should all be educated
consumers when spend the kind of outrageous money mfg. ask us to pay for
ANY vehicle they have. There are certain things they consider when
setting prices. While I may not list them all here, some include mfg.
cost, shipping and such like that. BUT, one other factor, is they
consider how much the consumer is WILLING TO PAY. Once the SUV craze
(for example) caught on they (mfg.) realized there were people out there
willing to pay that kind of money for a vehicle. Once trucks became
more than just a vehicle to haul hay out to the barns and became
'popular', the prices there went up too. Ever compare prices on the
smaller trucks to the full-size, or the small SUV's w/the full size?
The prices aren't really that far apart, at least not far enough in my
book to justify getting the smaller one, but they are very POPULAR, so
the mfgs. can get that kind of money from the people in that market. I
have done work for the auto industry (Packard Electric, among others)
and I've seen them give us a part, we work on it, they change it, we fix
it, they change it, we fix....you get the idea. I can see where some of
the overhead comes from, but when you consider that cost out over tens
or hundreds of thousands of vehicles that will be produced w/that part,
the cost of redesigning that part is minimal. I realize I'm just
talking about one part, but I think the point is that mfg. costs aren't
really THAT much per vehicle. Ever wonder why the kind of uglier,
smaller cars are so inexpensive (relatively, Personally, I think EVERY
car or truck is overpriced)? Because they're not as popular or 'hot' as
