The "premium" stock radios (cassette and CD, although the cassette are hard to find) also require a separate amp, and different speakers. Unless you plan on adding - replacing these also, stick with the regular sound system. The "premium" units will sound horrible without the amp or upgraded speakers. I tried replacing my stock cassette in my '89 probe with a "premium", and it was not a good experience. I had Best Buy install a JVC CD deck and it looks and fit just as good as my stock amm did. This was because there wasn't enough travel on the clutch linkage to disengage the clutch totally. It also got worse when it was hotter. My problem was that there was too much end play on the crankshaft, and when I put the clutch in, some of the available travel was used by the crank simply pushing in. What did I do? Put the old clutch disk back in--it wasn't worn out, but was thinner than the new one that I had the problem with. A few thousanths of an inch made all the difference. S. They don't "have" to be E range, but I feel a little better driving home with a load a rock ontop of 10 some nice 10 ply tires rather than some C range stuff....... What about the 265/75 i believe, (only if they would fit and not rub when turned and and under load...) is there anywhere to get those in E range or are they only available in C range (i think) they would be a little wider , and would be very close to the same diameter (according to the calculations) 235/85 --- 31.728 inches 265/75 --- 31.649 inches Thanks Casey ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Mar 1998 11:37:53 -0700 From: "Giddens, Scott" Subject: RE: F150 Tires (long reply) I would like to point out that NOT ALL F150's ARE THE SAME, NOT EVEN THE SAME YEAR. it's a case by case basis. I've had tire shops claim to have put a particular set of tires on a truck like mine before and gone off road and had chunks of rubber ripped off the tread and then gone back to argue with the guy over who was responsible. Things change, driving conditions vary, trucks get in accidents/sheet metal gets replaced, different suspension components get put back on, and tolerances on the frame alignment go to the far extreme of acceptable limits or totally out of acceptable limits. MY CASE: I had some tires left over from my last truck, 31" diameter/10.50's with aggressive tread and on the front they come very close to that plastic skirt under the bumper. On my truck they would obviously interfere while off-road, turning, and bouncing. I have noticed that the F250's, with 16" wheels, are without this skirt and some F150's with more aggressive tires have removed this skirt. I have also noticed that my truck has a larger gap than average between the grill and the top of the bumper and the gap is smaller than average between the front tire and this skirt approx. 1" with the wheels straight. Although it may be possible to adjust the bumper bolts to increase the clearance between the tires and this skirt I don't have the time to play with it. I think I will wait until I find a good 2" lift kit, wear out these old tires, then look for the best fit. MY SUGGESTION: Go to the tire shop and try the tires on that look like will fit by rolling them up to the side of the truck, taking into consideration they will increase only half the size they appear due to centering on the wheel. Then have them put on and turn the steering wheel to both sides while imagining what would happen if the wheel was to bounce up while turning. Or you can roll the side of the truck up on a hill or curb nearby and turn the wheels both ways. If it doesn't look right to you then HAVE THE TIRE SHOP REMOVE THEM AND GO DOWN A SIZE. The tire shops MAY not like you to do this because it takes time to do it right. But be aware they are not responsible for any damage if you go outside of the recommended tire size as stated by the truck manufacturer. The following is what finally helped me. Check for a vacuum leak either in intake/exhaust manifold to head gasket or carb to intake manifold gasket. The 300 straight six are notorious for having leaks in the manifold gaskets. The manifolds have a tendency to warp and create gaps in connection to the heads especially right around #4 cylinder. It has to do with the length of the manifold and placement of bolt attachment. I had my head and manifolds planed to fit each and didn't have the problem of vacuum leak or idle stumble since then. Also double check timing status after this is done.
