From: Lou Mallia
Subject: 1998, 1999 F250's

I've been reading what I can on the F250, as I am considering one as an
alternative to an F150. My objective is simple - short bed, 4x4, and a robust
manual
drivetrain. I'd like a 350 gas V8.

Can someone help with these questions:
1) Will Ford be offering a large V8 with manual trans in the F150 for 1998?
Assuming the answer to 1) is no:
2) When will the body style of the F250 be changing from the '92 style (1998,
1999)?
3) Are dealers still taking orders on the "current" F250 ('92) style? Is it
called 1998?
4) Will the 1999 F250 have a third door? When will the 1999's be introduced?
5) Does anyone know if the drivetrain of the 1999 will offer the option of
manual
locking hubs on the front axle of the 4x4?
6) Have Ford dealers indicated when the "window" will close on taking orders
on the '92 body style F250's?

What I'm looking for is basically a brand-new "70's vintage" HD truck - 350V8,
manual
trans, 4x4, manual front hubs, short-bed, supercab.
(I'd like to have the option of using low range on hard surfaces, and the only
way
I know of to do this safely is to not lock the front end by leaving the front
disengaged).
(I need to park a boat by backing up a very steep driveway, and I'd like to be
able
to use low range in reverse).

Flowmasters. The only way to go. You can get a Borla, but I really
dont think its worth the money.

Speaking of recommendations, has anyone tried the 2.3L headers from Racer
Walsh?
If so, what do you think about them?

If you live in Houston or even know about Ford Man Ted Mustang then this
might be some of some interest to you.

Ted Ehrhardt (aka Ford Man Ted) has after 42 years of working and running
his Mustang shop, went to Colorado and bought some land and is now
planing on retiring to Colorado in about 1 year from now. He has yet to
say what wants to do with the shop, if he wants to sell it out right, or
hire someone to manage it while he is in Colorado.

Try Maguiars Clear Coat Paint Scrub, works very well.

Hi,
I have a question that has probably been asked many times before, but as
a newbie......
I want to change the automatic locking hubs on my 87 Ranger 4X4 to the manual
locking hubs. Any advice on how much trouble this is to do? Any reasons not
to make the change? Best place to get the parts and what is needed? (need to
do anything to transfer case?)
Any help ?

Subject: Explorers and Broncos, what to buy

My wife and I are looking at Explorers and Broncos as a replacement
for our Bronco II. (Okay, she's looking at the Explorers, I'm
looking at the Broncos - Broncos are too truck-like... so she says)

We are looking at used vehicles and can afford only a 91 or 92
Explorer. Were the early years of Explorers a problem? Do the first
couple model years of a vehicle's existence sometimes have problems
that they fix in later models? Any recommendations as to what to
look for or avoid? This would be her vehicle mostly so we're aiming
at:
- - automatic
- - V6 (do they ever have V8 options?) 4.0L - other sizes?
- - 4WD isn't necessary, and it does seem to jack the price up quite a
bit around here.
- - 4 door hopefully

As for Broncos, I think I read that they became fuel-injected in 88,
true? I'm also leaning towards a 302 and not a 351. I won't be
towing anything and I've heard the 302 is more economical. Any other
things I should consider?

Thank you.

A good friend of mine bought an Explorer the first year it came out.
He has had MANY problems with it. Mostly little niggling
things...like fuel gauge that has NEVER worked for more than 3 days at
a time, seat belt tensioners. Annoying stuff like that. I just
bought a new Ranger with that same 4.0 V-6....hopefully the years
between have given them an opportunity to work out the bugs. My
advice... if you get the Explorer, buy the newest one you can afford.

I understand that the automatic trans in these early Explorers is prone to
failure. There are some other short comings but the auto trans is the
biggest.

Subject: RE:1998, 1999 F250's

Here are some answers to your questions.
1) The manual tranny is only available with the 4.6L V8, not the 5.4L.
The reason is because the tranny is a Mazda tranny and it cannot
withstand the torque from the 5.4L.
2) The new body style will be for the '99 model year.
3) The current F-250 HD is a 1997 model, no 1998 model changed.
4) I believe the '99 will have a third door. Orders can begin in Jan
of '98.
5) There should be manual locking hubs available. There are now and
I don't know why the would delete that option.
6) The window for orders will close in a couple of weeks.

Some other points of interest. If you want a 351 V8 with a 5 speed
in a F-250 4x4 with manual hubs, you better order it now! I don't
think that engine will be available in the '99 F series. What will
be available is the Triton V10 engine with a 5 or 6 speed manual
tranny.

Is this the same transmission that is in the current 92-96 style trucks? Or
did they get a whole new transmission?

Curious if anyone has had a problem draining their fuel/water separator in a
Powerstroke? I have a 95 w/ 34K and I have only been able to drain it,
according to owners manual instructions, once. Every other time, I've had to
keep the engine running (!!) to drain it (= serious mess). Seems like a
vacuum forms in the system w/ the engine shut down. Am currently getting the
runaround w/ a dealer who says that the system is automatic (ROTFL) and I
don't need to drain it manually. After 2 "technicians" told me this I showed
them the owners manual which specifically states in no uncertain terms to
shut down and drain w/ lever next to fuel filter. They told me to come back
next week when the "team leader" gets back from vacation as he knows more
about diesels. I'm now brimming w/ confidence in their knowledge of diesel
engines that they sell. If anyone knows anything about this problem, I'd
appreciate the input.

Well, I'm getting more serious about getting the powerstroke and even went

the lot. They were willing to show me the invoice but, were very unwilling
take any offers lower than $1500 under invoice. I have done my homework
and do know the invoice price. I basically want all the options XLT, pd,
pw, cruise, a/c etc. So, if you don't mind me asking? What price over
invoice did people with the same truck get theirs at? I want to know if
they will really budge on the price.

Thanks alot,

Depends on the dealer. Here in the SF Bay Area, I got a firm quotes for
more than $1,500.00 over the invoice all the way down to $300 over not
including a $200 rebate. I went with the low bidder, $100 over invoice.
It pays off doing your homework. Shop around.

Hi,

Help me on this one! My steering lost it yesterday! I turned a corner,
and I noticed a little pull. The next corner I took, it didn't want to
come back.

It's pulling to the left like crazy! I'm taking to the shop today, but
want to know what it could be! The steering is way loose. It is very
scary to drive. The pwr str fluid was at the full cold level when hot, and
the hoses etc under the hosing were oily. The fluid itself smelled burnt.

I don't like this one! And I just had it in the shop for a tune
up/inspection 2 months ago, and they said all was fine, after $1500 flippin
bucks worth of work.

Anyway, any ideas? I don't wanna get ripped off.... I'm thinking some
kind of seal...?

Later, Lou.
