The big advantage to the fwd is that if you are stuck you are able to "turn-out" of the ruts you make. While a load in the back of a pick up helps greatly for traction purposes it still does not compare with a front wheel drive. As an example I have about 300 lbs. of gravel in the bed of my '91 Ranger, when my driveway is has a fair amount of snow/ice my girlfriends fwd sedan has no problems and I will need to put it into four wheel just to get the truck into the street. Hope this helps. A new block shouldn't be necessary. New rings with a good hone job ought to solve the problem, for a lot less $$, IMHO. I base this on personal experience. A little over a month ago I blew a hub on my F-250 4x4 while in the back country in a snow storm. I chained the rear up and put two bull elk, over 800 pounds and it was a successful hunting trip, in the rear of the bed and tried to get out. I couldn't get up even the smallest hills. We ended up towing it 4 miles with an S-10 4x4 that was chained front only. In my opinion two wheel drive pickups are intended for paved streets in southern cities. I commute 80 miles a day in snow country with my fwd sedan with all weather tires and my 4x4s stay home. I've seen the time when I couldn't get either 4x4 out of my drive without locking them into 4 wheel and I drove my car out without a problem. Anyway, I just bought the truck and If your truck has the I6 engine, it has the Ford "9-inch" rear axle (so named for the diameter of its ring gear). This axle is widely regarded as one of the strongest ever made. Many professional drag racers use modified versions of this axle behind 1000+ hp engines. >have already heated the housing, trying to make the lube thinner). Another approach would be to remove as much of the old stuff as you can, then refill w/ fresh lube. Drive a while (approx 10-20 miles) to heat and mix up the contents, then drain again and refill w/ fresh lube. You could repeat this process a few times to "flush" out the old gunk. I know, it's a PITA, but just an idea. >radiator? The reason why I am worried about this is because the flex fan is >really odd looking. The odd spacing of the blades simply prevents weird harmonic noises that are produced by evenly spaced blades (like airplane propellers). Almost all OEM-type metal fans are designed this way. >truck appears to cool just fine, so maybe I just ought to leave it alone, but >I am curious about how an electric fan would affect performance/MPG. If the cooling is fine, you can always leave well enough alone. Some people have good luck w/ electric fans. By running intermittently (and controlled by a thermostat), the elec fan purportedly reduces engine load, which may improve mpg or performance, but not likely significantly. (The energy still has to come from somewhere, though, and the load is transferred to your alternator, which supplies the electricity to drive the fan motor.) >with an ACCEL "Super-Stock" coil that is supposed to fit it, but the stock >coil has a connector at the top that doesn't look like anything I have ever >seen. Looking though my manuals it looks like this truck has the earliest, >most basic EEC system. It has a module on the top of the driver's side wheel >well, a pointless vacuum advance distributor and the coil I mentioned earlier. The "horseshoe" style connector is for the primary circuit of the coil. This connector is common on Fords w/ the Duraspark 2 ignition system. Duraspark 2 is basically just a "pointless" ignition system, w/ the Duraspark module simply an amplifier for the signal from the magnetic sensor in the distributor. It's the progenitor of the true electronic engine control (EEC) systems used in newer vehicles. If you want to switch to a more conventional coil, just clip the wires (usually red and green) going to the horseshoe connector. Solder a lug connector to each wire and then attach them to the appropriate terminals on the coil (red goes to the positive terminal). >This isn't a question but an observation; what the heck is it with the >fasteners on this truck? It seems like it is about 10% metric and 90% SAE. >I'll find a brake line on one side of the vehicle SAE and on the other side it >is metric. Weird. As Ken Payne observed, it was probably worked on at some earlier point and different fasteners used. However, on my 1980 F250, there is also a hodge-podge of SAE and metric fasteners on the original components. I have even found some new OEM replacement parts from the dealer that are metric when the original issue was SAE. There are even OEM bolts with an SAE head and metric threads! (Here's an exercise in frustration: try finding a replacement at the neighborhood CarQuest for one of those.) Good luck. Dave R. This revelation is making me re-evaluate where the squeak was coming from. I am no longer 100% sure that it is the window.
