I don't know imprial measurements very well, but I think that's $2.50 a gallon CDN. That's about $1.70. Let's hope that prices don't jump up to the 63 cent range at Xmas like they did in the summer. Oh ya, most of the Oil companies here are U.S. based. They really stick it to us. Be thankful that the U.S. Gov't guarantees cheap oil for it's industry by making large purchases of crude, and selling it off to keep prices down! My 2 cents. Here in the lower penninsula of Michigan, unleaded regular gasoline is selling for anywhere from about $1.099 to $1.249 per gallon at the "name brand" stations. The lower prices are generally found in and around Detroit, with the higher prices at stations in the western and northern parts of the penninsula. I think that the average here in Ann Arbor is about $1.139 today. I hope that you find this information useful. There's no substitute for cubic inches. If you do use the 351, I'd give some serious thought to that setup you have in mind. A truck is not a Mustang; the intake setup you envision will certainly have horsepower, but at the higher RPM range. For trucks, with their extra weight, what you really want is torque as low in the powerband as possible. Here's a suggestion: look seriously at an Edelbrock Performer manifold and something along the lines of a Holley 650 or so 4V carb. This will give more punch off the line, and won't need a higher idle than stock (that hi-rise will). This will cost less, and give excellent performance *and* economy. Good luck. I wasn't very unhappy with the ride before but wanted to improve it somewhat, so changed the OEM shocks for aftermarket Gabriel "sport utility" shocks. Unfortunately I didn't ask the mechanic to save the OEM shocks. Boy, what a mistake. The ride became super stiff and harsh. I returned the "sport utility" shocks and put Gabriel "premium" truck shocks on the front, and Gabriel air shocks on the back. No improvement even with minimum pressure in the air shocks. It's driving me crazy. Putting on some new tires to replace the stock Firestone FR 480's helped a tiny bit, but I need to improve the ride of this truck to "better than stock". I am not expecting a Cadillac ride, but want to keep the truck and have it ride reasonably well since I put ~50 miles a day on it. I don't want to buy a new set of OEM shocks at Ford dealer prices just to get back to where I was -- I want to improve the ride for the daily commute. I am willing to trade off some load capacity in the bed to get a better ride. Your comments would be welcome on anything I could do to improve the ride of this truck. Currently I have the following plan: 1. Wait for the Edelbrock IAS shocks to become available. These are supposed to be the current champ in both handling and ride. They aren't shipping yet for the Ranger but should be soon. 2. Take a rear leaf out and/or trim the leaf pack spring length to reduce the spring rate in the rear. The "extreme" plan would involve maybe a four-link or ladder bar setup with air springs for the rear and possibly air springs for the front, but I don't necessarily want to drop the truck and go to all this trouble and expense. I sure would appreciate any comments and suggestions from any of you out there. The truck is a daily driver and has 114,000 miles on it, the motor uses no oil and as near as I can tell without doing compression checks is still very solid. For the most part I am happy with ride and handling and can accept the gas mileage but I do alot of off-road driving and the performance off road is not the greatest. There are no performance mods on it right now but I know are needed. My first thought is duals, what if any is the performance difference between cat-back systems and true dual exhaust, and what would be the most bang for the buck. What about the computer chips? What manufacturer have people had good luck with? What about intake mods? I would not like to loose any gas mileage if possible, and a slight increase would make this that much sweeter but realize something might have to suffer. I dont really want to change gears but would entertain it if need be. Money is not a big consideration, but I dont want to spend $5,000 either. I put in Explorer Pro Comp 3000's, which are a hydraulic shock. It rides with more stability, doesn't wallow on bumps and has retained most of its highway smoothness. The stock shocks are poor to say the least. Am very happy with the Explorer Pro Comp shocks. Does anyone on the list have one of these, and if so do you know where to plug in the antenna cable. I know it doesnt go directly to the antenna or the radio direct, because those two go together to get fm reception. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but I think there might be a box somwhere that it would plug into, but I'm not sure. see ya, Brett 96 Ranger supercab 4x4 4.0 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Dec 1997 11:54:47 -0600 From: Kevin Lindstedt....
