If they are the same again were can i buy one for the same truck? The Explorer and Ranger are nearly identical and theses kits will work on both models. The drawback to this system is it's use of the stock air ducting from thottle body to the mass air sensor. This duct is ribbed inside as well as outside causing the air to tumble, reducing intake velocity. Cold Air vs. Ram Air, the stock system is a cold air system as it draws air from outside the engine compartment. A ram air system positions the intake inlet directly in the path of oncoming outside air (it will take in a lot of water when raining). Motorcycle mfg's use ram air on some production models, and have stated in the past that the real advantage is usually seen at speeds well over 100 mph. Decisions, decisions......... So it's not me, and I can't blame it on anyone else. I thought the calipers were sticking a ways back so I replaced the calipers. The originals were with ceramic pistons and the ones I replaced it with had steel. I thought this would help, but it hasn't. I have had sticking calipers in my race car before but it was always just one, not both. I'm not too sure if it is the caliper. But it is something I need to look at. One thought I had - could it be that the master cylinder or something in the pressure side of the system just doesn't release all the pressure immediately when you take your foot off the pedal? Or that pressure doesn't ever get back to zero in the brake lines? Chilton's manual calls for it to fire at 10 degrees BTDC. The Ranger has a 2.9L fuel inj. engine, so I'm assuming that it has the EEC-IV (TFI) ignition system. According to the manual, no adjustment is required to the ignition system due to it being computer controlled. Well if this is the case should I worry that it is 2 degrees off from what is called for on the factory sticker? What is the timing supposed to look like on the pulley? Going clockwise I think I saw a "10 - - - - - -" with the pointer where 8 would be counting each "-" as 1. Is this right? If so the pointer should be at the last notch then if I am correct... I would have liked to upgrade to the Splash but I've got one more year of college left and just couldn't afford it. (even if the bank said I could!) I have a 3year/36000 mile warranty on the new engine so if it doesn't work out I can re-exchange it (God forbid!) for another one. I've noticed some mail recently regarding valve cover leakage on these 2.9 ltr motors, conversely I've noticed some pretty knowledgeable responses about this motor. I wanted to know what oil (synthetic?/weight?) you guys would recommend for the new motor -I can tell you that it's at about 4000-10000 feet most of the time and that its about 20-80 degrees fahrenheit here during the winter. I ran quaker state 10-40 in the old motor, but I was thinking of going with Mobile-1 10-40 in the new one. I also wanted to know about any special precautions I should take when installing the new one (rechecking the heads , crank, etc for the correct torque values?) which is claimed (by Checkers and Spartan) to be ready to "bolt in and go". I have the old motor 90% of the way out and the new motor in the garage waiting, but I wanted to ask these questions before I get too far along. I considered having Ford put in one of their remanufactured motors, but the warranty was only 12month/12000 miles and the cost was pretty much double! Yo VC: What was the source of the M-block engine you are installing in your pickup? Does it have the late model front sump oil pan? If it was originally from an '80-83 pickup, it should fit w/ no problems (if the engine mounts are, indeed, identical). I don't know about 302 engine mounts, but perhaps the mounts need to be taller for the M-block engine to allow the oil pan to clear the crossmember. You could try to find a '80-83 truck in a junk yard that was originally equipped with the M-block engine and scavenge the engine mounts from it. Also, engine mounts may be different for 4x4 and 4x2 trucks. Engine mounts in the '80-83 4x4 trucks were integral with (i.e., riveted to) the crossmember. M-block engines from earlier pickups ('79-back) and cars might use a different oil pan that will not fit in your truck. BTW: The 351M/400 was discontinued after the 1983 model year, so swapping in an older engine in your pickup may not be emissions legal, depending on your local laws. Good luck. Dave R. (M-block devotee) >> The frame part of the bracket or mount is identical for all the v-8 engines up through the 400M. The 460 that uses one with 2 holes (one over top the other). Of couse the isolator part is different, you should be able to get the rubber isolater at any auto parts store, just ask for one for an 82 F150/250 w/ 400M engine. This will work, if you have the the rear sump pan. Phil ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Nov 1997 17:43:42 PST From: "Kim Major" Subject: 91 Explorer CD player dilemma Hi all..... It has begun skipping as I play CDs....it started this all of a sudden. I know I gotta take it in but do I HAVE to take it to a Ford dealer or another repair place? Any suggestions? Recommendations? Much appreciated for all replies...... My friend has a smaller radio, and he built a cover around it and then ran power to his amps/speakers, and mounted the switches just under the radio so that he can flick different sets of speakers/amps (in a van). It looks (and sounds) great. Craig In a message dated 97-11-25 23:11:23 EST, you write: cassette player. Can it be removed and a new stereo installed? It looks so big--unlike the sizes I'm used to seeing the stores. >> ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Nov 1997 23:23:26 -0800 From: Ted Ladd Subject: [Fwd: bedliners] This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - --------------907DF7A56D8791B9CD5460B1 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Ted Ladd wrote: > Many thanks to Ken Justice for his honest and direct evaluation of the > two types of bedliners.
