Yo VC: What was the source of the M-block engine you are installing in your pickup? Does it have the late model front sump oil pan? If it was originally from an '80-83 pickup, it should fit w/ no problems (if the engine mounts are, indeed, identical). I don't know about 302 engine mounts, but perhaps the mounts need to be taller for the M-block engine to allow the oil pan to clear the crossmember. You could try to find a '80-83 truck in a junk yard that was originally equipped with the M-block engine and scavenge the engine mounts from it. Also, engine mounts may be different for 4x4 and 4x2 trucks. Engine mounts in the '80-83 4x4 trucks were integral with (i.e., riveted to) the crossmember. M-block engines from earlier pickups ('79-back) and cars might use a different oil pan that will not fit in your truck. BTW: The 351M/400 was discontinued after the 1983 model year, so swapping in an older engine in your pickup may not be emissions legal, depending on your local laws. Good luck. Dave R. Obtain four one-liter size plastic soda bottles. Cut the top off each one where the bottle begins to narrow toward the cap. Set them on the counter in a line.. Visualize each as one cylinder in a 4.0 liter engine. The diameter of the bottle will approximate the piston diameter in the engine. Visualize the piston of that size moving from the bottom to the top of each cylinder. For a 2.0 liter 4 engine, cut each bottle in two at the midpoint. Now you have 4 1/2-liter cylinders. Visualize as above. To make a 4.0 liter V-8, cut all four bottles in half and arrange in a V-8 formation. For those of you who have never seen the interior of an engine, I'll bet the pistons are a lot smaller than you thought. On the 302, the intake manifold mating surface is even with the opening for the distributer, on the 351w the intake surface is approx 1in taller. The major external differences are from the heads up, the deck is an inch taller so the intake manifold is wider, see? I used the same exhaust manifolds on my swap but had to notch the frame a half inch on one side for clearance. The exhaust "Y" pipe must be modified. Be sure to get the accessory brackets from the 351, they are different.
