Changed one about two months ago. Not a problem, except for all the gas you will get on you, trying to dodge the gas you will get on you. THe new filter comes with the new clips. Look at the new clips in the box. I felt they were self explanatory. I think a small screw driver is required to remove the old clips (pop off) but am fuzzy on that. THe filter is held to the frame by a permanent hose clamp arrangement, so a screwdriver is definitely required for that. The gas we had even in Sept is very, very nasty stuff, (not like gas of my syphoning youth!) so loosen everything and run while it drains down.I think the fuel line tool that everyone is talking about is for breaking the underhood fittings loose under the hood (that look just like the AC fittings), and is not needed for the filter (done that also). You may feel more comfortable depressurizing the system, by looking on top of the block, at the fuel rail, for a vertical device that looks just like an inner tube valve. Take the rubber cap off and depress the center to depressurze the system. You're used to your SEFI Ford starting on the first hit of the key. This time the pumps will have to fill and pressureize the system, so it will take 15-30 seconds of cranking before it will fire. good luck Dave Lampert ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Nov 1997 09:06:18 -0500 (EST) From: NyteWng Subject: Re: Axle Code ...If your axle code s X19 it should mean you have a regular axle (not limited slip) with a 3.55 ratio. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Nov 1997 09:23:28 -0500 (EST) From: NyteWng Subject: Re: fordtrucks80up-digest V1 #220 .....I wouldn't assume the worst yet - after working in and around new cars and trucks for the past ten years I've seen a lot worse! Thanks, John. i was playing around down there, cause vortech has you put a fule pump in-line with the filter to get more fuel pressure. anyway, it is possible to do get the clips off with a scredriverr, but i _strongly_ recommend you get a tool for it. there are different tools: one does the fittings under the hood, and that looks like an scissor type thing, so that you can open and close to get different sizes (hard to explain) and then the ones for the fuel pump are simple little plastic fitting type things. what they do, is to slide into the gas line fitting, and they push the little internal clips up, and it makes removing the line into a few second job. if you poke around with a scredriver, you can mess up the clips, and it takes a while, and is very tedious. problem is that these little things are kinda hard to find, but any shop that would carry ford stuff should have it. see ya..... - -- Geoffrey Hoffman gch2 Cornell University http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.pobox.com/~hoffy ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Nov 1997 11:16:26 -0500 From: "Roy Preston" Subject: Engine/Transmission Swap I am presently working on restoring my 1985 "F-150" pick-up. The marketing scheme is a two edged sword. GM wants to market the GMC seperately in order to tout it's higher resale and they also infer a higher build quality in the Jimmie vs the Chebby, much like Fords vs. Mercury. So conversely, if you want the marques to have seperate identities for marketing purposes, you also have to accept the downside of the lower sales numbers. Sutton Jr." Subject: Power Stroke Cold Start Problem I have a late 1994 F350 Power Stroke. Lately it has developed some weird starting problems. When the temp is about 36 degrees, it starts normal. Below that it takes about 15 minutes on the block heater and then it starts perfectly. Sometimes it will die after a minute or two. Might surge and die, might not surge. Tests show the relay to the glow plugs and the glow plugs are working. If the computer and the glow plugs were not working, it would not start at 36 degrees withou heat. >From my mechanic's description, it sounds like it might be the high pressure oil pump that operates the injectors. It has 143,000 miles on it using Shell Rotellat Multi viscosity 15/40. Does anyone else here run Shell in their power stroke and is it a good idea? It will be 20 degrees Monday morning and my mechanic will get to run all the tests on it, which I am sure will find the problem, but I already suspect the high pressure pump and am wondering if the oil is a factor. My 92 uses a special tool I purchased at Pep Boys. It looks like a X that pivots in the middle. The ends have half round pipe sections. You close the tool around the fuel line, shove it into fuel filter connectors and detach the lines. My X shaped tool covers two sizes. It is very similar to the quick disconnect couplers used on the AC and I suspect that one of the tools for those fittings would work also.
