This could be what you have. It is nothing to worry about, just check your tranny fluid and make sure it is full. I changed mine at about 50,000 miles and put some slick 50 stuff for manuals in it and that seemed to quiet it down a bit. It has made that noise since new, now 65,000 miles and six years down the road it still works great. Just think of the noise as character. There was a TSB for this noise in mine but every time I brought it in they would fix one thing and break another. Now I have to top off the fluid once a year cause it leaks. Usually manuals do not break all at once, but don't hold me to that. Usually you just lose a gear and can limp home. I had one friend lose 4th and drive for months without it with no problem. Delighted with the truck except for one irritating thing; There is a pronounced "snick" when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. No meshing problems with the other transitions. Have taken it back to the dealer. They acknowledged it, looked at me like I was crazy to notice such a small idiosyncrasy of the tranny, changed out the oil and put in lighter grade and told me that this was to be expected in a brand new tranny. I don't believe them. It has been 5K since the dealer visit and it has not "worn" away with use. Anyone else experience the same. I really plan to raise hell before my warranty runs out in getting this fixed. The previous Mazda tranny posts describing replacements at 21K don't make me feel any more assured that this is just an innate characteristic of this tranny, just snick and grin. I also have an RX7 and the gears shift smooth as butter. Thanks for any advice out there. I have a 1987 Ranger with the 3.0 and 5spd and 4X4. The tranny seems to be noisy even in neutral with the clutch engaged. Afriend has almost the same truck and it is much quieter. Do these trucks all have the Mazda tranny? What are the symptoms of the tranny going out? Does it just give out all at once or do you get warnings? Any comment appreciated Dennis Dennis; I had an 87 Ranger with 3.0 and 5 speed. 1. There was a recall on the shifter. Dealer says not needed on my truck at about 100K miles, it broke, requiring the very kit the recall said to put in. 2. About 50K miles, the reverse idler broke. Was 60 miles from home, but made it back to Ford Garage (lots of grinding and banging noises though. 3. When newer, the dealer made a mistake changing the spedo gear to calibrate the spedo, necisitating a trany teardown. Trany was always noisy after that. When I inquired as to the reason for the increased noise, I was told it was due to the different lubricant used in the trany rebuild. I was also assured the right lube was in there, but it was different than original and hence the 5th gear whine. Truck was used for mostly highway miles until 100K, then my son used it for a commuter. Got a lifetime average fuel milage of 21 MPG (I tracked every gallon). At about 140K, he sold it, and it now spends its life behind some big motorhome. Jesus said He could make the green with a 7 iron, so He hits it, and plunk, short in the water. He then asks Moses to retrive the ball for him so he can take a mulligan. Moses parts the water, walks out , retrives the ball, and returns with it. He then suggests Jesus try a 5 iron, but Jesus persists. Again, he hits the ball short, and again he has Moses retrive it. Moses again sugests the 5 iron, and adds that if Jesus is short, he can go get his own ball. Jesus persists, saying that Arnold Palmer can make it with the 7, and he should be able to make it with the 7 too. Again he is short, but this time, Jesus walks out on the water and gets his own ball. Meanwhile, the foursome behind them is questioning one of their caddies about the sights they are beholding. The caddy's reply is that although he THINKS he is Arnold Palmer, it is REALLY Jesus playing golf with Moses. Gary - ---------- From: Wayne Stefan[SMTP:boats Sent: Saturday, November 08, 1997 1:15 PM To: Gary & Karen Snook Subject: Golf Games One day Moses, Jesus, and an old man were playing golf. They were having a good time. So they came to the 16th hole--which is especially tricky. It was a par 4 and the green was surrounded by water. The first to Tee off was Moses. He stepped up to the tee and took his shot. It was heading straight for the green when it fell straight into the water hazard right in front of the green. Moses was a wise man so he raised his hands and parted the water so he could get to his ball. \ He took his shot and sunk it in 3 shots. He marked his score and waited for the others. Well, this time it was Jesus' turn. He took his shot and sure enough his shot went straight into the water. When he got to the water, he walked over the water, picked up his ball and tossed it on the green. He took as shot and marked it as three. Finally the old man had his turn. He hobbled his way to the tee. He grabbed his driver, took his stance and swung. This shot didn't look any better than the others it was headed straight for the water. But, just as it was about to hit the water a fish jumped out of the water and grabbed the ball. Before that fish could land back in the water an eagle swooped down and picked up the fish. Well, before that eagle could fly off it was struck by lightning, it dropped the fish, the fish dropped the ball and it plopped into the hole. After this Jesus looked at the old man and said "Dad, if you don't stop doing that we are not going to play with you anymore." ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Nov 1997 21:35:20 -0500 From: Mitch Biarsky Subject: 4R100 automatic transmissions - was Re: The 1999 Big-uns > Date: Tue, 4 Nov 1997 17:33:05 -0800 > From: John Yee > Subject: 4R100 automatic transmissions - was Re: The 1999 Big-uns > > Gee, thanks Robert... > > What does the group know about this transmission mentioned here? > Since Ford seems to run a lot of their stuff though the Fleet market > what is known about this transmission? > > In particular: > Durability > maintainability > torque handling (Power Stroke upped from 425 to 500 ft. lbs for 1999) > improvements over it's predecessor > etc... > > 4R100 automatic transmission (replaces the E40D transmission) > > And to be fair, what about the manual transmissions mentioned? > > M5HD five-speed manual transmission > M60D six-speed manual -- standard with the diesel engine > > thanks, > - -john > It looks like this is the same transmission used in the Navigator/Expedition. http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.dealersites.com/1998showroom/lincoln/navigator.htm The same fifth-generation electronic engine control computer (EEC-V) that regulates engine operating variables also governs the automatic transmission. The 4R100 transmission teamed with the 5.4-liter V-8 has a lock-up torque converter, four forward speeds, an overdrive top gear for maximum highway fuel efficiency, and a handy overdrive lock-out button on its shift lever. http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.costamesalm.com/mt.html Heres a more in-depth look at the new, more functional Lincoln: First, there are no great vehicles without great engines. The Navigators standard 5.4-liter/230- horsepower SOHC V-8 is a very good powerplant. (The mechanically related Ford Expeditions standard engine is the shorter stroke 4.6-liter V-8, with the torquier 5.4 available optionally.)This iron-block, aluminum-head V-8 produces strong, steady, and nearsilent thrust. In fact, teamed with the 4R100 four-speed automatic, the shift quality, idle smoothness, and overall driveability of the Navigator powertrain felt better than that of the last Lincoln Town Car we sampled. (A more powerful DOHC 5.4 is being developed by Ford. Stay tuned.)
