Is this engine speed (RPM) related or vehicle speed related? That is, if you shift down or up to another gear, but keep speed constant, does the vibration go away? If it does not go away, then it could be a driveline resonance problem. This usually affects 4X4 trucks because of the high prop-shaft angles. It is worse on short-wheelbase configurations because the angles are even worse. The usual cause is stiff U-joints which resist moving with prop-shaft rotation, which pushes the rear of the transmission around. At certain speeds, the assemble vibrates and creates a droning sound. Your truck is fairly new, and the U-joints should be fine--unless you got a bad one from the factory. I'd take it in and have them check it out. By the way, how can you hear drivetrain noises over the engine? I considered a Powerstroke, but didn't want to put up with the clatter. - -- Best Regards, Dave Baldwin Dallas, TX - -------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 09:03:56 -0800 From: Joe Maleski Subject: Re: $1700 for a transfer case?!? (Same motor, just with a turbo) So it was pretty cheap! 2) There are 2 routes to take to install it. A) Swap motors and get 175 HP with full boost B) Keep your motor, Modify the waste gate and run with 6 Psi. Both are pretty complex... "A" requires the computer and the same modifications as "B" "B" ( the route I chose) you need to make up spacers for the manifold because it has to be mounted upside down and the ports will not be matched. Exahust is simple, I got the parts from Murray's. No computer mod's were needed. But I needed to do a lot of plumbing. I needed to tap an oil line off the sending unit, and run an oil line in to the side of the oil pan, and make up a new air inlet tube (Plumbing store). It took 2 days of afternoons working on it, plus another day figuring out what my optimum boost pressure was. Total investment about $500.00 3) The performance increase... well it put a smile on my face! I don't have any numbers, but it was pretty easy to feel the difference. When the turbo spools up you can feel the extra power! It's enough to beat a lot of cars now off the light. '95 F150 That is some serious coin for just the case, but it's probably par for the course for anything from a dealer. Try National Drivetrain Inc. in Chicago at 1-800-507-4327, they have everything from differentials to transfer cases to transmissions, both rebuilt and new. Consider getting the case and replacing it yourself, I had a "79 Blazer that I had to replace the transmission on, I got away with it for about $900 when it was all said and done, that's counting renting a transmission jack on three seperate occassions because the truck was too tall to fit in my garage and I had to do the job by myself outside amongst the rain, etc...That thing had the cast iron full time four-wheel-drive NP-203 transfer case, what a pain! Anyway, enough whining, Boyce Equipment & Parts Co. also has driveline parts, but the transfer cases may be limited to New Process. Their no. is 1-800-748-4269. Or you could give Performance Gear in Lumberton, MS a call at (601)-796-2026 (sorry, I couldn't find a toll-free number for them). This does not include orders which I got out of the PO box today. Those will get sent out tomorrow or Monday. This list includes people who ordered stickers or donated in the past to keep us alive. If I missed anyone or got the amount wrong let me know. Please be honest about this, the list isn't broke but it does run on a shoe-string budget. I only sent 1 sticker to donators as I didn't keep names cross-referenced with amounts unless it was an order (so I wouldn't play favorites with list members). Also, I'd like to propose a slight price increase. Envelopes big enough to mail the stickers without folding them cost us an additional $26 and we spent over $15 in postage over the week. This brings the total bill to: Stickers (plus tax) $149.80 Postage $ 15.00 Envelopes (500, they'll last a while) $ 26.42 --------------------------------------------- $191.22 That comes to $1.91 per sticker not including posting for the ones which haven't been sent yet. This figure goes down tremendously with the next batch as the envelopes are paid for and the screen layout costs are covered. I'm looking at roughly $1.00 profit per sticker, with all money made going towards list expenses. Here's the increase I would like to propose: 1 sticker $ 3.50 2 stickers $ 6.75 3 stickers $10.00 4 or more $ 3.00 each These prices take into account postage. Let me know what you think. As always, I like to keep the money matters in the open. I'm due to post another full accounting of our expenses, donations, sticker orders and advertiser income (not a large amount). Has anyone else been the victim of this guys stuff? > Yes, the address (I don't know if it happened to more than one person) came off the list. Like you stated, I don't give out the addresses. Heck, I don't even look at them except when I do a member count or when I do administrative tasks that require it. However it is a fairly simple matter to copy email addresses from people who post if you're subscribed. The individual really didn't know he was doing anything wrong. I've sent him an email about this matter and I've been assured it won't happen again. I consider it forgotten at this point. I'm planning on making some additions to our FAQ which will address this issue and others in the near future. I would like to state to everyone here that you do not have to worry about posting to the list. This was an isolated occurrence. It hasn't happened before and hopefully the new FAQ will prevent it from happening again. And remember, this individual really didn't know it was improper. I would have considered it intentional malice if he had gone through the archives for addresses and spammed everyone. I've informed him how we have several vendors who participate on the lists as members, not vendors. These people have had a lot of success by approaching members (privately) when the member asks a question which can be answered by the vendor. Case in point: there's a member who has 4 barns of 40's & 50's Ford trucks and parts. Whenever someone asks about locating a part he will privately email them if he has the part. I think this is a proper and helpful way that vendors get involved --- everyone benefits. Am I being too soft? Perhaps. But I feel its best to err on the side of caution. I've learned from Unix administrator friends a very important lesson: most users don't know their doing anything wrong and change when they find out they are. Ken Admin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Oct 1997 21:35:28 -0500 (EST) From: Bill03bt Subject: Torque Specs I've been reading this discussion with interest. Torque standards are defined using threads lubricated with "a light coating " of 10w oil. There are exceptions to this in certain special applications, so read the manual for your specific circumstances. I have always just used motor oil on the bolts and have had no problems, like a lot of you I'm sure. I do, however use Never-Seize on exhaust manifold bolts/studs/nuts. This is primarily for the hi-temp protection. One word of advice however, a little goes a long way and more is not better. If you really slather the stuff on, it WILL allow the fasteners to loosen up as it is much thicker than oil and will not flow out of the threads easily. Enough of that, but I would like to toss out a new related topic. What types of torque wrenches do/have you used? Any preferences, etc. I did a lot of research into this several years ago at work so feel free to email me privately with specific questions. This might be a topic of interest to the group though. I see a lot of posts like this. They run in the general form of: "I'm having -X- problem. What's wrong?" It would help us a *LOT* if some details were given. In this case, what has been done to solve the problem? Is asking the question here the only action taken? Have the plugs been checked? How about a compression reading? Is the air filter filtering the air, or blocking it? Is there a potato(e) in the exhaust? Did this problem occur just after you tried to drive through five feet of water, or did it come on slowly? Have you been trying to tow a 45' fifth wheel trailer? In other words, what have you done already to find the problem? In this case, the most basic thing to do would be a good tune-up. A tune-up will point to other things that could be wrong. The plugs, for example, could show very uneven cylinder conditions, or an extremely rich or oily condition. The air filter could be so clogged it's more of a closed window than a filter. The exhause could be damaged, pinched off so that back pressure is very high. Without this kind of info, we see answers that are nothing more than wild guesses, and most of them will not help at all. This is not meant to be a flame, but rather to show that a more complete description of not only the problem, but also actions already taken to solve the problem or pinpoint the solution will help immensly.
