The anwser to your question is yes, they share many components. The first
explorers were not much more than a stretched Bronco II. My 89 BII shares
the same front end body components, drivetrain and interior components as
the early explorers(at least the 89-90 models of the BII). I replaced
some interior parts on my BII from a 92 explorer.

Does the Explorer share the same or similar frame and
mechanics as the Ranger/Bronco II? Having never been
under the hood of one I don't know. If so, how's this
for a suggestion...
Since the Bronco and Expedition are built off the
"big" truck lines, why now seperate by having a

I saw someone asking about parts, I found a place on the web that you can
use to locate (ford, chev, and chrysler) parts. It works best if you have
a part number but there is the ability to search by description but this
takes a long time, if I need a part I'll call my local ford dealer and
get a part number then go to www.partsvoice.com, enter the part number
and my area code and it will give me a list of all dealers that show a
stock of that part along with dealer location and phone numbers. I have
used this several times to find parts that my dealer said he could'nt. I
have also found a place out in California that sells parts at cost plus
20%, considering that most dealers sell parts at list price or above this
can mean a considerable savings for example a TPS for my BII is $48.XX
list, I got it for $28.XX from this dealer. A center console armrest to
replace the one in my BII lists for $202.xx, I got it for $155 fro this
same dealer. The dealer is Kearny Mesa ford in san diego, the parts
number is 1-800-635-6669. I usually order 3 or more items at a time the
savings more than justifies the $8 ups charge to the east coast (SC).

Nope, you're right, they do look like the Ram. I too was disappointed by
the Ram/front end influence in the prototypes I saw back in June. Ford
fans better get used to the ribbing we're going to get from the Dodge crowd
when the F-350 is introduced next year.

One Thing I've had problems with in the past on my 87 6.9 is the ()*! !
Water/Fuel Seperator going bad. It essentially starts leaking air into
the inlet line, so my engine would catch run for about 2 seconds then die.
I'd have to crank it for 30 to 35 seconds and let it idle roughly as the air
was bled from the injectors. I've since replaced mine a long time ago
with a military surplus one ($5.00 instead of $200.00).
If the starter is engaging and the engine is cranking, the problem you
sounds like it's coming from the injector pump solenoid switch. If it's
sticking the engine won't get any fuel to start.

Does anybody know what the Purolator product # for Bronco II (2.9) is? If it
helps, that's Fram #PH8A or Motorcraft #FL-1A. I usually use Motorcraft, but
I want to try Purolator.

I don't agree that you need to leave this list... from everything I have
read (not having actually compared the two trucks) you are essentially
buying a Ranger. Some of the sheet metal and interior pieces may be
cosmetically different but I believe the rest of the truck(s) is the same.

This is a long shot but it was my solution. The day after I bought my 88 250
7.3 this summer, it wouldn't start, although it sounded like it was cranking
good at first, it quickly drained the batteries, so I bought a 40/200 amp
charger/starter, that did the trick for awhile, then even 200 amps was not
enough! After a few cranks I thought to get under the truck and feel the
starter to see how it was doing, and it was too hot to touch! Ouch! Replaced
the starter myself ($250 Western Auto, lifetime warranty) and it fired right up.
Still though, 45 minute breaks are the hardest starts for me but I'm hoping
the rebuild this month will fix that. The 2nd mortgage check is to arrive

Where are they made? Even the fords are made with parts from Canada and
elsewhere so what is the beef?

When I was shopping for a Ranger, I also shopped Mazda. The latter is a
Ford except for some cosmetic details, so the Ford shop says. Mazda builds
them in Lousiana and New Jersey. The Mazda and Ford chassis are made side
by side by a joint Ford/Mazda venture (two concurrent assembly lines).
Mazda has the non-Ford body panels made in Brazil, shipped to the US and
slapped on. In fact, I have it from an auto body shop that the Ranger and
Mazda beds are not bolt-on replacements for each other - the
mounting holes are in a completely different place on the frame on the

Same story for the Mazda Navajo from 91-94. They were built by Ford on the
Explorer assembly line with slight trim modifications and accessories.
