On the highway, this truck = would like a "6th" gear, and milage isn't as good as it could be. Tach = reads 3,000 at 65. There is plenty of power available for anything = without downshifting. Thanks - Gary ---------------------------------------------------------------------- My Ford Motorsport/ Dealer buddy says nothing is available for this transmision in the way of non-stock gears. I have been looking for at least two years now. I installed a LS 3.73 in a 2wd 91 4.0 Ranger with 235/60/R15 tires, reads 3100 rpm at 75 mph. My 5th gear ratio is about 0.86. The speedo has been calibrated. If you come up with anything let me know. I've been thinking of changing to a T-5 but you have to relocate the shifter back about 4" which is really too much work. 4.0 Liter Performance in Cal. makes a T-5 to 4.0 bellhousing but is extremely pricey, was around $800. They are trying to get the price down and are not really marketing it right now. greg.medert - --UNS_gsauns2_2703390295-- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 1997 07:09:43 -0500 From: "Charles A. Yo Dave: No M-block engines (351M/400) used four-bolt main bearing caps. Of 351Cs, the following had 4-bolt main bearing caps: 71 Boss, 71 CJ, 72 HO, and 72 4V. Casting numbers for these blocks are: D0AZ-D, D0AE-J or G, D2AE-CA The D2AE-CA block was cast to allow for 4-bolt caps. Some used in 2-bolt applications were not drilled and tapped for the extra bolts, although the provision (extra metal) is there. Hope this answers your questions. Dave R. It's very fast, comfortable, and I think it looks great. The regular cab is bigger, which is great, and the 4. 0L screams. Thanks for letting me brag. My question to all of you is what do you all think of this new truck? The looks have changed and so has the suspension. They use SLA instead of I-beams and rack-and-pinion steering. My 95 F-150 extended cab, 5.0, auto, 3.55L rear, gets about 15-16MPG in mixed (80% Hwy, 20% city) driving. I don't drive it lightly, either. The stupid transmission calibration makes you stomp it WOT before it downshifts and allows it to build some revs. You sound like you're getting pretty low milage. Doubt the plug gap is causing your problem. You might start with easy stuff, like seeing if you get error codes from your controller, plugged air filter, plug wires, maybe catalyst, things like that. You didn't say if performance "sucks" or not, or how many miles are on the truck. - -- Best Regards, Dave Baldwin Texas Instruments, Inc. Hello, I am confused with the different designations that Ford gives their 5.0 engine... I have a 95 F-150 Extd. Cab truck with the 5.0 and E4OD transmission. I am unsure about the following things: 1) Is the motor in my truck a 5.0 or a 5.0 H.O. ? What is the difference ? 2) Does my truck have the Speed Density or Mass Air intake on it ? 3) If it has the Speed Density, Who makes a mass air kit for it ? I have the Ford Motorsport catalog here, and they dont list one for the E4OD, only a manual and the AOD. Whats the difference ? Are they street legal ? 4) Why do they say you have to have Mass Air to do any engine modifications ? I want to install a set of headers, a new intake, 1.7 rockers, and possibly a new cam. Why would it make a difference ? ( And what would you suggest as far as what I have listed ? ) I am not looking for a hot-rod truck, just one that has a little more "Umph"... If I bought a Lightning short block, what would be involved in getting it to work in my truck ? Would the heads, etc. from my 5.0 fit on it ? What extra stuff would I have to buy to make the conversion work ? The H.O. in the 'stang makes in excess of 220 HP (someone else may be able to quote exact figures), and delivers typically about 205HP to the rear wheels. I believe the truck is about 180-185 HP. I've been asking all kinds of engine questions lately, and here's what I found: The H.O. not only makes more power, but has a different firing order. It seems that the firing order in the 5.8L was found to be more smooth, so they incorporated it into the 5.0 H.O. There is not any power to be gained from this, because you can buy performance cams with either firing order. You just have to match the ignition firing to the cam. > > 2) Does my truck have the Speed Density or Mass Air intake on it ? Mass airflow. Having a EECIV or EECV means that it is re-programmable, and I am sure that there are people out there that can help you match the programming to the modifications. Check out Auburn Performance Equipment at http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.tiac.net/users/goape/index.htm Gary Spradley and I have been having an extended discussions about the small blocks. The local Ford garage replaced this and that (six trips over three months - saying that any truck with 42,000 miles on it is bound to idle a bit high) until finally a buddy of mine (merely a backyard mechanic) sprayed Gumout around the intake manifold gasket while the truck was running and the idle went back down to about 800 -- "There ya have it", he said. Ten dollar gasket and the truck was perfect. Eric S. - '94 Splash Ext. Cab 4x4, 4.0L - 'slightly modified' ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Sep 1997 22:59:01 -0400 (EDT) ....
