Subject: 87 F-150 gas tank/pump troubles
I know that this has been mentioned on this list before, but I really paid no
attention to the responses because it wasn't relevant to me. Now that I have
to help a friend out with this problem, I will pay more attention.
The truck is an 87 F-150 2wd 4.9L with the dual gas tanks. The problem is
thatthe truck always gets its gas from the front tank, no matter what
position the switch is in. The switch does cause the gauge to register the
appropriate reading for the tank it's set to. It has been like this for
about 2 years. I believe that, before this, the truck would draw from the
front until empty and then begin drawing from the rear, with the switch
remaining in the front position, which also doesn't sound like it was working
correctly. Any suggestions on where to start here? The back tank has been
full for most of this time (I don't know why my friend never drained it) and
it's a shame to see that capacity go to waste.

You might be well advised to seek the advice of a lawyer.
While you are buying the insurance, you are not the owner or buyer of
the vehicle, and the insurance must usually follow the wishes of the
owner/buyer. In a lease, this becomes a clouded issue.
It would seem to me (I'm not a lawyer) that you shouldn't be liable for
a re-stocking fee if they ordered the body in their own, but then,
that's what lawyers are for.

The person asking about putting a 4.0 into a 2.3 Ranger shouldn't! Do a
302 conversion using Maverick or Comet V8 exhaust manifolds and a C-5
auto transmission. It fits perfectly using "V-8 Conversions" motor
mounts. Some radiator mods will also be required.
If you put a 4.0 in an 89 or older Ranger (and probably newer) you will
need COMPLETE wiring diagrams and schematics from both vehicles and the
computer and as much of under hood, chassis, and dash wiring as you can
get from the donor truck. Wiring colors don't match. Basic dashboard
functions are not plug in and require a lot of splicing. I've been
involved with both conversions.....the V-8 is easier, faster, lest
costly, and delivers a lot more fun. V-8/C5 conversion costs about
$1000, 4.0/4AOD costs close to $2,000.

Geez louise! well. . . Since I have the 2.3 L now, I'll need a stronger,
heavier-duty tranny, differential, and other stuff, won't I? I've never
done anything serious as far as automotive work goes. . I'm learning, but
don't have much opportunity. I'm 18, and with school, a part time job, a
girlfriend, and other activities, it gets kind of hard. But thanx for the
info, I sure appreciate it.

I'm 99.99% sure cruise control was not an option on the '66 F-100. (I
owned one for several years, wish I still owned it. Converted it over to
disk brakes and full-floating rear axles from an F-250, but I digress...)
In this case your best bet is good 'ol J.C. Whitney, although you could
still retrofit a factory system. You'd have to change at least the
steering wheel over to a later model, and you'd have to wire it all
yourself or fit the factory wiring harness.
Even with the '74 I would still go the J.C. Whitney route. They work fine
and some of them look good, too. Not entirely sure what parts you'd need
for the factory route. But you'd certainly need:
Actuator/vacuum reservoir (now there's a concept! A reservoir for
Steering wheel (or at least the center pad w/cruise buttons). May need to
change additional parts if the contacts are not present in your original
Cruise control computer and complete wiring harness (wiring harness already
installed perhaps?). With a schematic manual, you could wire it yourself.
Speed sensor (driveshaft-mounted in '74? Does anybody know?)
Brake interrupt switch (and clutch interrupt switch, if manual trans)
Probably not as much help you were hoping for, I know. Sorry! Do what I
do when I get a hair-brained idea like this: Go to a wrecking yard and
poke around and see how it's done. Then you can decide if it's worth it or

Good for a couple of notches on the hp stick.
Look at the exhaust system. A header & aftermarket exhaust will also
bump the hp.

You could probably do the swap, I would think there would be front
suspension issues, as well as cooling, etc. What about swapping in a
2.3L intercooled turbo motor from an SVO mustang or Merkur? Wouldn't
that be a direct replacement?

I vote for the input line to the cooler. I want to know how hot the oil
is getting in the transmision not how good my cooler is working. Some
installations have two sensors and a switch to select between them.
That way you can get real temp and cooler effectiveness.
If you don't care where you are, you ain't lost.

For those that have the Motor Trend magazine, see the June '97 issue.
page 100. The pictures are a bit easier to see in the magazine,
unless you have a *real* good monitor.
In addition to the cut out's on the doors, you should be able to note that
the cab overhang does not exists on the 1999 HD trucks like on the Light
Duty F150/F250's. There were references in various articles about some
issues with frame flexing, in which the truck bed was smacking into the
overhanging section of the cab. The HD truck styles resolve this issue.
So if you take a look at the power force on the web page referenced below, and
the pictures on *this* web site, you should be able to get a fairly good idea
what the 1999 trucks are going to look like.

Subject: 1993 F250 Ford that rumbles
My truck is a 1993 F250 7.3 liter diesel with 2 wheel drive. I have a
rumbling front end and have replaced shocks at all four wheels. Replaced a
cracked rotor and have replaced the drag arm. I had the tires rotated and
balanced. Checked brakes and relubricated the hinge points with neverseize.
I had the front end alignment checked and brought into alignment. It was
slightly off on the right side. There is no play in the steering wheel when
on a lift any movement of one wheel results in the same movement of both the
other wheel and the steering wheel. I also have examined both front wheel
bearings and have had them repacked. The right front tire jumps all over at
55 mph and stops at about 68 mph. I don't know what to do next.
Thanks for any help anyone can give me. The truck is an extended cab with a
4.10 rear and is used to tow a 5th wheel trailer. It has 81K miles on it and
runs like a race horse. Except for this problem it has been a faithful

I had an '89 f250 Xcab Diesel 2wd 3:55 do the same thing. I rotated
the tires, new shocks, alignment etc... I had the tires off of the
truck on a spin balance machine and noticed when I spun them they
were out of round (center of the rim was not concentric with the
outside). I felt I to had tryied everything to get rid of the rumble
so this had to be it! I went to a wheel company and bought 2 new
steel rims to fit. I put the same tires on the new rims and balanced
them. this cured the problem. I took it on vacation the next week out
west (5000 mi round trip) and had no problems.

Type of driving: 70% city / 30% highway
Location: Austin, TX - humid and HOT
Oil & filter: Amzoil synthetic
My mileage seems to stink, I consistently get between 12-15mpg whether I'm
in the city or highway. Lately it seems to be getting worse. I've changed
the air filter and run some BG 44K fuel injector cleaner through it but
neither of those seemed to help at all. Tires are properly inflated as

I'm sure this question has been asked many times but I just joined this
list yesterday -- what is a good yet economical way to eliminate the front
end sag on my f-150?
I have a 95 5.0L extended cab that I'm trying to make look a little tougher
- - like a 4x4 f-250. I don't really want to do a body lift because it seems
like I'd need to go to 16' tires in order to fill the wheel wells if I go
that route. I don't have that kind of cash.
I saw someone on another page suggesting replacing the original front-end
springs with f-250 springs. Makes sense to me and others I have talked to.
Does anyone know if this will work or if there are any negative side
affects I should consider? My parts guy says we can probably get the
springs for $40-$60 - so it meets the economical criteria. Would it be
advisable to replace rear springs as well.
If there is any meaningful discussion on "front-end sag" in the archives,
please advise and I'll look there.

In actuallity, vacuum is negative pressure. So what you have is
a reservoir for negative pressure. In the operation of the iron
lung breathing machine, they called it positive and negative

I've thought about the turbo, but my truck is 4x4 and I don't do high
speed/high RPM, so the turbo would be worthless. Besides, I've heard it's a
lot harder to work on turbos . . anyway, I like the idea of the 302. I've
thought about that for a long time, and that would give me more than enough
power to pop on bigger tires. I have too much other stuff to do to it before
that though. I'm just dreaming/planning!

Subject: What I have learned:
I have learned the following things since I last asked questions here:
1) The shop manual I received from Helm shows a Tach that tops at
6KRPM. I'm sure the same tach was used for all Ford light trucks in 1980.
2)The original tire on the vehicle was a P215/75-15LT. I got this off of the
sticker on the doorframe and also the Helm manual (chap 11).
Does anyone have an opinion of the body panels for sale in JC Whitney?
It seems like just about every spot I have rust through is covered by these
panels and the price looks OK.
In regards to prices on the 97 F-350. I bought my F-250 H/D w/ Powerstroke,
Crew Cab, 4X4, XLT Package, Tow Package, Camper Package, Off Road Package,
rear tinted glass, rear sliding window, Floor Mats & Bed Liner for $31,000
(before tax and Lic.). This price was $300.00 over dealer invoice. I
arranged the deal by using AutoVantage. There are several outfits like
AutoVantage and there is no reason to pay more than $300 to $500 over dealer
invoice for one of these trucks.
Do your homework and look around, you will save yourself some $$$$.
