If your truck is a stick, make sure you don't rest your foot on the clutch pedal, or the cruise won't turn on. I was all worried when my cruise only worked half of the time, but then after reading the owners guide, I found out that depressing the clutch shuts of the cruise ( I never drove a stick regularly before). Even if you rest your foot on the pedal ever so slightly, it will not work. Josh ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Sep 1997 10:33:13 -0400 From: "Mike Jones" Subject: Re: ABS controversy O.K. here's my two cents... Overall, I am sold on the benefits of ABS having experienced three vehicles with the device: A '93 Explorer, a '96 F-250 Powerstroke and now a '97 Expedition. Some observations: I found with the '93 Explorer that ABS could sometimes be a detriment. At one time we lived in the far reaches of Northern New York, near the Canadian border. Winters are brutal there, and the roads tend to stay snow/ice covered for much of the winter. Occasionally, with the vehicle in 4-high and braking for an intersection, the ABS would begin pumping so furiously that there was little or no braking action at all. The only thing that worked was to let off the brakes altogether and start braking all over. Once we became used to the phenomenon it wasn't much of a problem. In fact, it was a nice reminder that I was driving too fast for conditions. But I have to wonder how many people just plow right on through the intersection. This was true when the vehicle was in 4 -high, since ABS capabilities are most limited in that case on vehicles without a clutch or differential between the front and rear drive systems. (When one wheel is locked, since the fronts and rears are coupled, all wheels are inherently locked. (I suppose one front could be still rotating, but you see the point.) In fact, don't know if it's still true, but Ford used to disable rear-wheel-only ABS when the vehicle was in 4wd for just that reason. More confusion, I'm sure... Well anyway here are my stats: I have a Ford F100 '80 built in Fall of '79. It has the 4.9L OHV 6. (EGR,air pump,p/s,regular(no power)brakes Carter 1bbl carb It has the Ford 3.03 Manual transmission Approx 118,000 miles Since I've bought her I've had to do quite lot of work to get her to pass inspection here in VA (emissions too). But she finally made it with flying colors. Now I just have to deal with oil leaks, gas tank that leaks when over 3/4 full, rear tanny seal leak and a temptation to spend too much time and money on her. My questions: What is the stock HP for this truck? What range should I get if I get a tachometer? Why does the owner's manual not recommend towing with the config I have? What were the original tires on this truck? (She now has H75-15LT bias plys). What would fit? What is recommended? What is the difference between an F100 & an F150? Thanks for your time. It only rains a couple of times a year around here so it's never been a problem, just an annoyance. I can't figure out if it's the relay or the switch. It's the switch most likely, although neither the switch nor the module is a great piece of work. My 95 F-150 got to the point where more and more of the delay options wouldn't work. I finally had it fixed under warranty. I heard that there were complaints due to the switch and the module (clicking noise of the relay, mostly), but "cost pressures" prohibited them from implementing changes. We'll see if the new switch holds up better than the last one. I'd wager many of you out there have the same problem. - -- Best Regards, Dave Baldwin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Sep 1997 11:12:16 -0700 From: Bill Funk Subject: Re: fordtrucks80up-digest V1 #89 > > Date: Wed, 03 Sep 1997 12:54:13 -0400 > From: "C. So we should test ABS by trying it on surfaces where: 1. It doesn't work well. 2. Any prudent driver should already be slowed down, and excersizing more caution. Sure. Forget how it works on the surfaces where you do most of your driving. Don't test it there to see how it feels, and how it reacts. This is why ABS is getting a bad rep; because people don't know how to use it. Instead of getting good tips, we get the above; instead of teaching people to slow down on such surfaces, we are told that ABS is supposed to work there, but it will kill you instead. Do you test your 4X4 on the bottom of a 20' lake to see how the traction is? You should! You will find that that truck you think is so cool will kill you! You'll drown! What? The truck isn't supposed to work there? Well, guess what? ABS isn't supposed to work on those surfaces described above, either. - -- Bill Funk President, ASCII User Group http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.starlink.com/~ascii ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Sep 1997 11:27:10 -0700 From: Bill Funk Subject: Re: ABS > Date: Tue, 2 Sep 1997 21:29:34 -0400 > From: "Mark J. That's where you do the vast majority of your driving, and, thus, where you are most likely to have an emergency requiring hard stopping. Accelerated Motion Performance Products http://www.ford-trucks.com//lc/lc.php?action=do&link=http://www.amotion.com They have online catalogs for three separate Ford engine families Small block engines '62-'94 221, 255, 260, 289, 302(5.0), & 351W(5.8 ) Cleveland and Modified (335 series) '70-'82 351C, 351M, 400 Big Block '68-'94 370, 429, 460 (These are their descriptions, not mine. What's a big block 370? Never heard o' that one.) It looks like they plan on adding catalogs for the I6 (240, 300), V6 (232/3.8), and FE families eventually. Being into M-blocks, I checked that particular catalog out, and I was impressed. It's almost like a Summit catalog, but with tables and specs only, no pictures. Even better, it's kind of cool to see what's available for your motor without having to wade through pages of irrelevant Ch*vy or M*par stuff. (According to the web site, they have no paper catalog, but if you have a printer, you can print the web pages out.) My Disclaimer: I have never dealt w/ this company, nor do I know anyone who works for this company, including me. I have no idea how reliable they are or what the quality or level of their service is. I just found their web site to be interesting. Apparently, they are based in Burnaby BC, so maybe one of our Canadian list members would know something more about them or their reputation. Anyone out there dealt w/ them? Dave R.
