The camper weighs apx. 2000 lbs. wet and count on an additional 1000 lbs. of folks and gear. We will be going to fairly remote sites for camping and stargazing. Not intending to do any radical four-wheeling, but would like to be able to get around in mud/snow/sand. The truck will be driven on the highway for long distances and then into the boonies. I have been checking out the F-250/350 series. The powerstroke diesel appears to be a good option. I've spoken with a few owners, no one has anything bad to say about mileage or performance. One failed recently, naturally when I could have really used 4wd. What's a bit odd is that they worked fine just a week ago, no expensive noises or anything of that sort. I always treat them gently, full stop before engaging, no turns on dry surfaces, moderate acceleration. Just didn't and won't engage. Does anybody on this list know the ususal failure mode? i.e. is it too much torque (it's a PS diesel), binding from being on a too-dry surface, dirt? (I can guess along with the best of 'em; I'd like to hear from someone who 'knows'. The dealer is useless for this type of information.) I'm going for a direct replacement this one time, but if it happens again, I'll switch to manual hubs. I hate to lose the convenience, but better to have 4wd available than not... Mileage is anywhere from 15 to 20+MPG. Rated tow capacity is well above your intended use. These trucks hold their resale value much better than 460 equipped models, too. Before you buy, look around a good price! I drove 500 miles to save about 4K. Plus, no "little back room" bickering on the deal. I know many folks with "push button" rangers and explorers where the system fails to operate in freezing temps., due to freeze- up or ?. Bottom line, "auto lock" is a crummy idea. I can't find a good wiring diagram that show these > connectors. > > Thanks > John, you can test those plugs, by installing the fuse and using an ohms meter or 12v test light inserted into the plugs. The only problem I see is that you'd also have to find out where the fog light switch was supposed to be mounted, get behind there in the dash (or under) and find those connectors as well. Then, you'd have to make a connection there using 'jumper' wires. The benefit to all of this, of course, would be that you could order a switch from Ford and install it into the dash to look factory. Otherwise, you'll have to find a place to mount your new toggle switch (that came w/the light kit). I know that some mfgs. have it set-up that when you turn on your high beams, the fog lights kick off. Does anyone know if Ford has the Ranger set-up that way? If they do, John, you would at least be able to keep them (fogs) on w/the brights if you install the auxiliary switch that came w/the kit. Also, do you plan on installing the Ford factory foglights? I think you'd need the airdam w/the holes cut out of it, to get the factory look. Hope this helps a little. They're installed this way, because it gives a better ride. To increase you're trucks' height via the shackle, you would have to flip it (back to the old, normal, non-inverted way), because, if I remember right (it's too cold out to go look) the factory mount has steel in the way, so the shackle can't hang down. Now, I just read an article on this in a recent magazine issue, but after flipping thru for the last 20 mins, do you think I could find it? Nooooo, of course not, so I'll have to tell you what I remember. It seems to me, no one makes a 'kit' for the Ford trucks, (I think there's one for Ch*vy). So, with the ol' grinder in hand you could remove the old ones; then bolt and/or reweld them back into place (only upside down obviously). Remember, the difference in the location of the spring eyelet holes must be halved to get your actual lift. In other words, if you flip the shackle, you'll probably move the spring mount down about 4". That will net you 2" of lift, because the axle is in the center of the springs and only moved half of that distance. Btw, how do you run 4.11's in the rear diff and 3.55's in the front on your '87 Bronco? Hope I could help, Randy > ------------------------------ Tom M.
