I have an 1987 F150 and the dash lights have failed. I have opened up the dash, checked some bulbs, checked the fuse box and checked the continuity of the light switch. I would like to remove the instrument cluster to check the circuitry behind it, but am unsure how to disconnect the speedometer cable. In the older vehicles, you could just unscrew it, but I guess that was before odometer rollbacks became common. My questions are: 1. Has anyone else had a similar problem? and how did you solve it. 2. Is there any tests I am missing other than tracing wires for shorts? 3. Can I disconnect the speedometer? If not how do you debug the cluster? Thanks in advance. Suspect that this truck was in an accident involving the right front quad or quite possibly the whole front end. Have the frame, suspension, engine mounts, etc checked out, esp since it's a 4x4. Look for other signs of accident repair like paint spray-over inside the fender or engine compartment, and on suspension and engine parts. Also look for welds that are not factory grade or in non-factory spots (use others of the same vintage for comparison). Research the truck's past if at all possible. It may have just been super-rusty and body parts were replaced. Or maybe it was a flood victim (XLT interior in an XL). I however, suspect it was in a front end collision. - -- James B. My >$.02 Sometimes I have to wonder about Ford's #1 claim. Yes, the F150 outsold the Ch*vy and GMC trucks for 15 years running. But it has not outsold Ch*vy and GMC trucks combined. And they are basically the same truck. Ahhhh, marketing.... I don't know what the exact combinations are, but I can give you my own personal experience. All of the Rangers w/ 265/75R15's that I've seen have been automatic w/ 3.73 gears. '94 Splash Ext. Cab 4x4, 4.0L, 5 spd manual: - - bought w/ 235/75R15's and 3.27:1 gears - - '95 => put 31x10.5's on w/ factory rims and gears - no problems, but gearing felt a bit steep (gas mileage, off-road creeping, towing, accelerating - all barely noticeably degraded) - - 4/97 => 4" Trailmaster lift (shimmed t-case, dropped sway bar, new brackets for exhaust, dropped pitman arm, etc. - the whole kit & kaboodle), Trailmaster SSV Shocks; w/ sway bar in its new position, 31X10.5's on stock rims began to barely rub; everything else came out great => alignment came in perfectly, no shimmy from driveshaft; note the truck now sits level - rear add-a-leafs w/ 2" block - had about 550 lb. of furniture in it the other day and barely sagged a half an inch; the ride and road handling is much better than it ever was stock (stock's much too soft & bouncy) - off-roading is now an absolute blast!!!!! - - 6/97 => 32x11.5's on 8"x15" AR rims (3-3/4" backspacing, as compared with stock approx. 5" - hey, no more rub - imagine that), 4.10 gears (Reider Racing), Bushwacker Street Flares & inner Fender well mud flaps to cover the 1-1/2" to 2" of tire sticking out from under the truck (have to satisfy these jag-off inspection stations in PA); the 4:10's made all the difference in the world!!!! I had my reservations about revving too high at highway speeds, but, with gearing at about 2300 rpm/63 mph, the truck is getting better gas mileage than it ever has before (about 19-21 combined 10% city/90% hiway) and I don't have to downshift for every hill around here; I also had my reservations about the 32's floating around in the snow, but with 6 - 8 inches on the road during my 30 mile trek to work today, I had absolutely no probs - as a matter of fact, if felt more sure-footed than it ever has before - only used 4x4 once - starting out on steep icy/snowy hill - the leveled weight distribution in this truck makes 4x4 almost obsolete (at least on-road). I've rambled way too much here, bought when I read your message, I remembered the butterflies in my stomach when I was forking out all this cash and wondering if the truck would actually end up to my liking (it's not like you can test drive a built truck); the advice I did manage to get when a long way - I hope I've helped in some way.
