(I have the Bronco II). I have been given various places to look, but can't find it. The in store manuals list the part, but I can't find where it goes! A relative has an 87 ranger, and he suggested the air filter box... as have others. The spot that he described does seem to exist, but there is no way that a part could fit in there. It looks kinda like this: ___________________________ | |______| | | | | |___________________________| The small box to the right has a small oval opening, but the part is very rectangular, and much larger. As well, the air hose protrudes right up to the edge of this "flap". Anyone know the answer to my problem? Is it possible that there is no part for my specific vehicle? I had this problem on a full size chevy 4x4 and the only way they could fix it is to install heavy duty springs and shim the shims and center support. On my F-150 the dealer has installed a new slip yoke(per technical service bulletin) and that didn't work. On the second try they replaced the same part and shimmed or increased the pinion gear backlash. That also didn't work. Now the dealership service manager is saying that that is normal. Three weeks after their last repair attempt the rear end makes a "clunking" noise on acceleration. I have called Ford and they have not provided any help. If anyone has a recommendation for a dealer in the Phoenix area please let me know. Any suggestions or comments is appreciated.> Is your truck equiped with a limited-slip rear end? If so, the shudder is common (I experience it with my Expedition as well) and can reportedly be remedied by a lubricant additive; the lubricant as delivered from the factory allows the clutch packs (again, LS rear only) to grab and chatter. The new clunking noise I'm guessing was caused by your dealer's attempts to fix the problem. Mike J. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Nov 1997 12:06:26 -0500 From: "C. E. Well I'll be darned... I passed one of these trucks several weeks ago near Yosemite. I literally thought that the truck was a Dodge with some sort of custom grille/frontend package. It was a four door crew cab, and knowing that Dodge doesn't offer one of these, I figured it was some sort of Centurion conversion. Man is that an ugly grille in person. The mirrors looked wacky on the truck, though I've seen them on Econoline-based RV's. There were no emblems of any type on it and it had a dark blue license plate on the back, meaning that to me it was from out of state. It had a largeish diameter (maybe 2 1/2") single exhaust exiting behind the rear tire on the passenger side. It was a two-wheel drive dually. I figure 2wd because from my truck I seemed to be looking down on it, it sure didn't have a solid front axle. Does anyone have any info on the new truck's suspension? Is the TTB a thing of the past? To me that is a far more significant change than what the trucks look like or how many doors they have. I bet >they still sell them as Industrial Engines. More likely part of Fords move toward Ford2000. They are in the process of greatly streamlining models / options/ and part variances. Sooner or later all engines (FoMoCo, Mazda, Jag) may end up as part of one big happy modular family. Ford has stated (and I forget the exact numbers) that possible vehicle combinations will drop from the present ~17,000 different combos to just over 2,000 - most by the year 2,001. Look for a lot less individual options, more "loaded from the factory" vehicles, and fewer, more encompassing PEPs... Wanna see some cool examples of this? Look at Fords UK website (wish the US Escort was like theirs!) >> How can I get extra economy and power out of mine? >Drive slower :) Or tie it to a semi. Seriously - there are a bunch of performance shops out there for the stovebolt 6 - mostly deal with breathing (valves, headwork, cams) and pistons. The rods are as strong as you could want - and a lot of them get used in 5.0/5.8 stroker kits! Unusual question as power & economy tend to be somewhat diametrically opposed.... The head gasket is going to have to be replaced it's leaking pretty bad (undriveable). I think I may have some leaks on the bottom (pan and rear main) but I can't be sure. Ford mechanic said that if it's leaking at all on the bottom and I replace the head gasket that will make the leaks worse. I don't want to brake it down and then have to go back in a week later. As for me I have the manual, and feel good about replacing the head gasket. An engine swap might be a bit much for me at this stage. May be easier though then trying to rebuild the one in it. In order to FINALLY fix the rear main, they had remove the engine and tranny and replace the crank. Needless to say that didn't make me too happy. It has also been plagued with numerous popping noises from the front crossmember (covered under a service bulliton), that they 'mostly' fixed, rattling and groaning noises from somewhere on the nose of the engine that only happens when it's cold (it's in the shop as I speak, for that), and numerous petty things.
