Same logic applies to manuals. Take the case of two of my F-350 flatbeds, used for towing / hauling daily. One driver never tows heavy loads in 5th, one does. Driver who doesn't going on 80K miles on original clutch. Driver who does has new clutch job..... Its up to the driver to pay attention to the truck. It had never came to my mind and in fact until I heard this I was considering having it applied to one of my trucks. Here it is, if by some piece of bad luck you are involved in an accident and that area of the truck requires body work, extensive or otherwise, the "liner" will have to be removed to facilitate this work. Problem #1 is in the actual removal of the liner itself, not an easy task to say the least and very labor intensive, and sometimes impossible. #2, Insurance Co's are refusing to pay for this very labor intensive process which in fact more times than not ends up requiring the replacement of the entire bed. Which of course they rufuse to pay for also. I've got a 1985 Ranger which sounds virtually identical to what you describe. It was called a Ranger "S". After 213K miles, I've still got it and it's in daily use. Worst I ever had to do was a crumpled fender when it was a year old, some front-end parts about seven years ago (they installed grease fittings, so you can actually lube it now) and a clutch replacement earlier this year. Oh yeah, and a carburetor rebuild (which took the shop two tries.) My guess is that the 1988 model was probably the last year run for the 2.0 engine (kinda like a 1960 Edsel, y'know?). It's not a real powerhouse, but my insurance rates are relatively low, and as long as I can get it up to 65 when I have to I don't complain . > Is it a fleet truck or outside U.S production? Probably a fleet item. I refer to it as the "DC Parking Enforcement Model" since the District of Colombia government meter maids used to have dozens of 'em on the streets downtown. Also one of the guys in my band maintains a couple of older Rangers in their fleet - I'll ask him if they've got the same brand, with the 2.0. > She has a lot invested in the truck, but getting work done on it is > difficult. Why? It's about as simple a vehicle as you can get. I think there's maybe one "black box" under that hood. My mechanic is from the old school, so he doesn't seem to find it real daunting. My one complaint with the truck? The 5-speed transmission, which is a Toyo Kogyo (Mazda) product. - -- Geff King * gking Data-Bases Searched * Dog-Houses Slapped WHILE-U-WAIT "Anybody who wears gloves while playing the upright bass is a wuss pure and simple." -- Bangs Tapscott ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Oct 1997 21:47:04 -0400 From: bigguy Subject: RATTLE I have a 94' Ranger 4.0l V6 with a 5 speed. It is rattleing when I first engage it in reverse or 1st. actually it is when I first start to go and I am just giving it a litlle gas. If I give it a good amount of gas it will not rattle. It seems that the vibration from the engine is causing something to rattle. It sounds like tin ratlle ing against some other metal. I checked the litlle guards around the cat and muffler thinking that was the problem but they seem really tight and secure. Has anyone had this type of problem?
