(I own a Ford Expedition with the 5.4L and 3.73 LSD and have plenty of power, but I only get 11 MPG mileage). I assume that Ford has smart engineers and marketing people, so there must be a good reasons for them going with the 5.4L instead of upping Chevy's 5.7L to 5.8L or more. Does anyone out there have some insight into Ford's design decision? Thanks, Ernie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 1997 17:01:07 -0400 From: Andrew T Vincitore Subject: Tailgate Weight ratings? On my 92 f-250 I am concerned about the capacity of the tailgate when ope= n and suspended on the cables. I can't find any referance as to the safe capacity of it. I load and unload pianos using a ramp and the combined weight of piano, equipment and manpower can get high. Does anybody know where I can find this out ? Thanks, Andrew (Glad we didn't go with Truck Suck?.... ) = ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 1997 16:36:14 -0500 From: Sean Winters Subject: RE: rusted out v8 oil pan Just did this same thing this weekend on a 4.9 six so I don't know how much of it you can apply. 1. Loosen motor and transmission mounts 2. Remove (a lot of) oil pan bolts and set oil pan on cross member 3. Remove pick-up tube bolts from oil pump 4. Remove oil pan and (disconnected) pick up tube at the same time 5. You know what to do from there Sean Winters swinters > -----Original Message----- > From: PhilDyson > Sent: Monday, October 13, 1997 1:17 PM > To: fordtrucks80up > Subject: Re: rusted out v8 oil pan > > > > tuscola > > > I have a 88, 150 4wd with a 302 engine that has an oil pan that has > rusted > >out. I don't think there is much you can do about it. You basically have to wire it so it gets juice with the IGNITION ON (sounds like the way you had it was right). > > anyway, anyone know about this, or what did people do to hook this up? Luckily, I didn't need one for my s/c (Kenne Bell 6.5psi on my Bronco). > > some more general questions? what is this fule pump needed for, and there > is some "fule managment unit" that is hooked in line with the fule return > line to the tank, and what does that do? The in-line unit just boosts fuel pressure so you deliver more fuel under boost (boost gives more air, and you need more fuel to match). Again, in-lines are notoriously NOISY! That little FMU dude is a valve which closes off the fuel return line under supercharger boost. That way, if you're in boost, the fuel pressure raises (mine goes up to about 80-85 psi under full 6.5 psi boost). Normally fuel is pumped to the engine & some is returned to the tank constantly. IF the FMU closes off, it can't get back to the tank & pressure builds immediately. It's a must for any aftermarket supercharged car that doesn't have a custom computer burned and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. The FMU (fuel management unit) is kinda a quick fix, but it works well. Regarding your in-line pump: my suggestion (after listening to the guys at the local speed shop) is to dump the in-line unit and replace the in-tank unit with a bigger in tank pump. (More work, more $$$). Other option: call Kenne Bell at 909-641-0985 and tell them your situation & ask about their BOOST-A-PUMP. It might save you some cash & labor. It boosts the voltage to your stock fuel pump (overdrives it, but nothing drastic --- and yes, they do claim that it will in no way limit the life of your fuel pump...at least no more than the short life fuel pumps have anyway) to get more fuel out under boost. Here some discussion back from awhile ago. The F450/550 looks like it's Fords response to the heavier 5th wheel trailers that are available, that exceed the capacity of the F350. If it's anything like like the Super Duty Class A Motor Home chassis' that have the same GVW, then I'm guessing the GCWR is in the 25,000+ lb ballpark. It looks like there's money to be made between the F350 and the Western Flyer type tow vehicle :-). - -john From: KNBD87D Date: Thu, 2 Oct 1997 18:02:54, -0500 To: fordtrucks80up Subject: 1999 F-250 HD+ specs....
