Well first thing you must determine is if you actually have "flow", the new
componets you described don't ensure this. You can check this a couple of
ways: One, you can really just look in the Radiator, start with cap removed
and observe, check for flow to begin ( starting with a cold engine) when your
thermostat would normaly open, if it is flowing you will know. Second, when
you do have a overheating condition, is the upper and lower hose the same
temp? if you have good flow they should be just about the same, too close to
tell by touch anyway. I'm thinking you have a radiator that has a partially
cloged core. This is the direction I would go in to find the problem with the
information you provided, of course the more info, the better the educated
guess. I hope this does help you a little. Send more details and I am sure we
can tackle this. And HEY, those old Couriers were KEWL, I almost bought a 4WD
conversion one brand new in 78. Wish I had, would have been a fun toy.

Subject: suspension lift?

Good morning,
Thanks to everyone who responded to my "pinging" problem. I don't
remember who got it but, It did have to do with the k&n installation.
I followed someones advice and disconnected the battery and let the
computer reset. The pinging stopped. Someone hit it right on the nose.
My next project:
On my 1991 f-150 4x2 aod 180,000 mi. I am trying to get some info on a
lift kit. I hear about both body lift and susp. lift. Obviously the
susp. would be more expensive. But I am only looking for about 4 in.
What are my best bets . The susp. kits are about 3x the price of the
body kits and it seems like Summit has about the best prices. I can do
the work myself, so thats not a problem. I guess I'm just trying to
find out if the suspension kit is worth the extra money and labor time.
Thanks
Jmac

Thanks for the info on diffs. I contacted Powertrax about their locker
spider gears. They seem to offer all the options I want , locker traction=

when needed, open diff advantages, and reasonable cost. $359 plus
installation( 2-3 hours) with no messing with ring and pinion. Does
anyone have any experiance with the Lock-Rite Product? I understand they
are popular with the mustang and 4x4 crowd. I just don't want to get stuc=
k
this winter and be able to get up my driveway. Overall they seem like the=
y
know their stuff. As to driveability, I can imagine that driving a bronc=
o
or other short wb truck can be hairy. My truck has the longest wheelbase =
so
it should be OK. The clicking they refer to is minor they claim and in m=
y
large truck he said I probably won't even hear it. So we'll see.

When I first read the subject I thought it said "overEATING' and I was very
much interested because I've been trying to lose weight for years. But I was
wrong. Anyway, good luck with your problem.

First, I take it that this is carburated? If so, does it overheat
at idle and does it idle rough? If yes, then adjust the idle mixture.
You should mixture adjustment screws on the bottom/front of the
carb. Unfortunately, due to emission laws they may have limiter
caps so you might not have this option.

Second, you may need to have the radiator "boiled out". This gets
rid of years of deposits that decrease cooling efficiency. Partial
blocks on old radiators aren't uncommon. There was a long discussion
months ago about using a small amount of Drano in a warm cooling
system to do this. However, I cannot vouche for this and I don't
know if it would cause gasket leaks. And remember that stuff is
deadly!

Third, check the timing. Get a cheap (no need to spend more than
you have to on an item you won't use much) timing light, mail back
and I'll walk you through the timing procedure if you've never done
it before. I don't have timing specs but it won't be hard for me
to get them. I don't think this is the problem, most likely its
#2.

Fourth, I hate mentioning this one but it does happen.... Perhaps
you had a bad thermostat and put the replacement one in backwards?

Tow trucks often have a higher (numeric) rear end than normal (over
4.10:1),
making them seem to have more low end grunt than normal.
In addition, many shops "warm up" their tow trucks a little (legal or
not).

Hey Josh,

Like you, I am an 18 year old college student looking for more power
from my '98 4.0L with a stick. IS your truck a regular cab shortbox
like mine? How much power did the Hypertech add and the K&N? I heard
you must run premium gas...is that true? Do you know you must have
atleast 50,000 miles on your truck before you change catalytic
> converters to get two for "True Duals?" If you are looking for more
HP and want to spend $300-400, you can either add headers with your
custom exhast or you can try a larger mass air sensor and a larger
throttle body. If you want to reach 300 HP, you must add all the
stuff mention PLUS a supercharger and a shot of Nitros. A lot of
people use Nitros, and as long as you don't over use it, it shouldn't
harm your engine.

ps. Another question..does your truck have limited slip rear axle and
what gears? Also, what tire/
wheels are you running?
