Mile Markers response to the Ford concerns re hydraulic pump were
exactly as I would have expected - there had never been a reported
case of hydraulic pump failure determined to be caused directly or
indirectly by one of their winches - and there is absolutely no reason
to doubt this. Its the hassle with Ford that I am afraid of.
STILL - and from a purely marketing point of view - something in writing
like that provided by Gale Banks Engineering, which states simply that
in the event of ANY hassle with Ford, Banks will directly and corporately
support the customer, would have been the clincher as far as I am
concerned. Too bad.

The noise that I'm getting is when I'm preparing to downshift into 1st gear
from 2nd. I have the clutch flat on the floor, and put my hand on the
lever while slowing down (about 20 mph or slower) and then I get that funky
buzz. It's almost like -- and keep in mind I have a little knowledge here
. . . very little . . . it seems like to me that the shifter may be trying
to work against the syncronizers. That's the only thing close that I've
thought of -- since the truck is totally disconnected from the motor, the
only thing left turning would be the output gears and the
driveshaft/rearend and that. I've tried to get it to do the problem while
just driving down the road -- but no luck on replicating it. I wonder if I
tap the
brakes while trying to get it to do it? I know I'm not crazy --
my father-in-law experienced the same thing and he's had many more years
behind any speed manuals than I have even been alive.
Any hints?
BTW: This is on a '95 Ranger Splash with the 4.0 and a 5 spd.
Thanks!!!!!

You can use a flat razor blade on the windows, and then shoot it with
glass cleaner. It may help to leave the window facing the sun before
you start (to soften the adhesive). I don't know about the stupid
dealer decals. Try to face those to the sun, too, and see if they
are easy to peel. If not, some body shops have cleaners that take
those stickers right off.

Do you live in Maple Grove? My grandparents live in Maple Grove and
my grandpa owns Treemendous, Inc....Ya know, a tree farm. Anyway, I
live in Inver Grove Heights, and I work a Ford dealership in So St.
Paul. We had a 97 F150 supercab, 4x4 flareside with the

package here. We installed a set of chrome step bars made by Westin.
They looked great, but I didn't talk to the mechanic to see if he
had to drill holes or how long it took.

Mike,
I would be very happy to see a set of underdrive pulleys made. I am
looking forward to buy some for my '98 Ranger.

Subject: Fuel Pressure (Manual Anyone?)
Folks,
Does anyone have the service manual handy for a fuel injected 460 (7.5L)?
I would like to know what the fuel pressure is supposed to be at the fuel
rail on the 460. I drove my beast to work today and the darn rear tank is
much worse than ever, and I intend to find a pressure gauge at lunch today
to measure the fuel pressure. Somebody mentioned that it's just a
schreader valve on the fuel rail.
So far no word from Ford yet on the third redesign of the fuel pump - the
new pumps should be in the supply line this week, at $301.54 it had better
work...
Thanks,
Joe

WD-40 works well too. I've not had any problems with it discoloring paint,
but I don't spray it all over, and clean it up as soon as possible.
I vaguely recall that ether works too. I think ether has a low evaporation point
too, so you could use the decal over if you wanted to. I remember seeing people
do this while trying to trasfer ski tickets a long time ago. But I also have
no experience how ether reacts to painted metal. Be warned.

During the "winch shootout" test in the current issue of Petersen's 4WD
magazine the writers experienced *two* power steering pump failures while
running their tests.
It comes down to a simple question of what are you going to use your winch
for. If the truck is going to be stationary and you are using the winch to
skid logs across the back forty all day long, then the hydraulic winch is
superior. If, on the other hand, you are going to have to rely on the
winch to get your stuck (and possibly stalled) truck home, or up and over
some gnarly obstacle then the electric winch wins hands down.

Brian,
There is a product my wife bought called "Goo gone" that is basically a
citrus oil that works FANTASTIC to remove the sticky glue residue from
labels and stickers. You might try using some vegetable oil first; I believe
it should be harmless to the finish if you wash it off immediatley after
removing the glue residue.

Judy,
I have a '97 Ranger on which I installed a fiberglass lid that is as you
described. It clamps on, requiring no drilling to the box; the one I have is
built by A.R.E., and comes with a lifetime structural warranty. They custom
make it for you, and the price includes installation, and painted to match
your truck. Where I live, in Long Island New York, the cost for my short bed....
