Hello,

Ive heard that to calibrate the speedo in 92-96 F-Series trucks, the
service tech has to push the Tripmeter/Reset buttons in a certain
sequence to calibrate the speedo. Is this true ? Does anyone know what
the sequence is ? Why can you only do it 5-6 times ?

Thank you,

Bob

Bob,
going from 2.73's to 4.10's will be a major change for you.
The 4.10's will cause substantially higher rpms on your engine.
In some cases going from a lower to higher gear can improve
gas mileage but only in certain instances. Generally it will
decrease mileage on the interstate since a given speed will
require more rpm's to maintain.

Here's a few figures for you to ponder:

If your vehicle has 28" tires and cruise rpm is 2500
with the following gears, your speed will be approx:

with 2.73 76mph
with 3.08 67mph
" 3.55 58mph
" 3.73 56mph
" 4.10 51mph

To achieve the same rpm/speed with 4.10's as the 2.73's
you would have to have a 42" tall tire... since this is not realistic,
your rpm's will have to come up....

If you were traveling at 65mph with 28" tires with
the following gears, your rpm will be:

with 2.73 2154rpm
with 3.08 2431rpm
with 3.55 2801rpm
with 3.73 2817rpm
with 4.10 3236rpm ouch! there goes the gas mileage.

okay same scenerio with 33" tires
>
with 2.73 1828rpm
with 3.08 2062rpm
with 3.55 2377rpm
with 3.73 2497rpm

with 4.10 2745rpm a much more realistic cruising rpm

Hope this helps...
the figures were produced using my custom automath calculator software.
If you'd like the formulas, let me know.

Oooh. I would get a second opinion. Might call your local dealer's
service department and check with them. I would expect gear lube, but
other lubricants in manual gearboxes is not unheard of. I had 4 speed
'box in a '63 Jag that took SAE 30 motor oil (non-sync 1st shrieked like
a scalded cat).
I definitely wouldn't go far without double-checking this first.

By the way, congrats on the rebuild. You didn't find anything fraged?

There is a schraeder type valve on the fuel rail going to the injectors. Press
the center of the valve with a suitable tool whilst holding a rag over the
valve. The pressure will be released and the rag will absorb the escaping
gasoline. Now you can remove the old
fuel filter with little mess. The new
filter I bought at the auto parts store came with new plastic lock clips and no
special tools were required.

Got a quote today and made arrangements for our static cling
window stickers, quantity 100. Supposed to meet up with them
tomorrow and give them a disk with the design....

However, at 5:00pm today I joined the ranks of the gainfully
unemployed. It'll be about a week or two before I'm employed
again (computer programmer) so the stickers are on hold till
then.

My wife and I went out this past weekend looking for a used
car to buy (cash) to haul the young'ens around in. Thankfully
we didn't find what we wanted.

Have no fear, the lists and web will stay up, I took care
of those heavy expenses in advance about 2 weeks ago....

Later,
Ken
