Is this true ? Does anyone know what the sequence is ? Why can you only do it 5-6 times ? Thank you, Bob 235/75's going to 32's asrmk1 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Oct 1997 03:50:34 -0500 From: Gary Spradley Subject: [none] >Date: Tue, 30 Sep 1997 11:00:02 EDT >From: silent.bob >Subject: 2.73 to 4.10 gears in a 2.3L Ranger >My question is, how much more gas am I going to be sucking if I go from >2.73's to 4.10's? Bob, going from 2.73's to 4.10's will be a major change for you. The 4.10's will cause substantially higher rpms on your engine. In some cases going from a lower to higher gear can improve gas mileage but only in certain instances. Generally it will decrease mileage on the interstate since a given speed will require more rpm's to maintain. Here's a few figures for you to ponder: If your vehicle has 28" tires and cruise rpm is 2500 with the following gears, your speed will be approx: with 2.73 76mph with 3.08 67mph " 3.55 58mph " 3.73 56mph " 4.10 51mph To achieve the same rpm/speed with 4.10's as the 2.73's you would have to have a 42" tall tire... since this is not realistic, your rpm's will have to come up.... If you were traveling at 65mph with 28" tires with the following gears, your rpm will be: with 2.73 2154rpm with 3.08 2431rpm with 3.55 2801rpm with 3.73 2817rpm with 4.10 3236rpm ouch! there goes the gas mileage. okay same scenerio with 33" tires with 2.73 1828rpm with 3.08 2062rpm with 3.55 2377rpm with 3.73 2497rpm with 4.10 2745rpm a much more realistic cruising rpm Hope this helps... the figures were produced using my custom automath calculator software. If you'd like the formulas, let me know. Gary Spradley MA/MIS University of Alabama at Birmingham spradley ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Sep 1997 18:13:08 -0500 From: "David J. I would expect gear lube, but other lubricants in manual gearboxes is not unheard of. I had 4 speed 'box in a '63 Jag that took SAE 30 motor oil (non-sync 1st shrieked like a scalded cat). I definitely wouldn't go far without double-checking this first. By the way, congrats on the rebuild. Press the center of the valve with a suitable tool whilst holding a rag over the valve. The pressure will be released and the rag will absorb the escaping gasoline. Now you can remove the old fuel filter with little mess. The new filter I bought at the auto parts store came with new plastic lock clips and no special tools were required. I have heard wonderful reviews about the Isky 262 supercam, but have also read that the stock computer would not be compatible with such a cam. I have also thought I might swap up to a 5.8l. My budget on this project is the limiting factor. Would the Isky cam work with the computer? Are there other RV cams that will work? What would I have to change to 5.8l? A K&N and a new computer chip are also in the plans. Any input on which chip? Any info would be appreciated. I will probably go on over to the Ford dealer some time this week and check one out with a test drive. Definitley looking for the 4.0 V6, wouldn't settle for anything else. Who knows, I may drive away with a new F-150 4wd reg cab, 8ft. box. I will let everyone know what happens in the ext few day's. Again, thank's for everone's input. Paul ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Sep 1997 23:38:42 -0400 (EDT) From: MEB8100 Subject: Ford Ranger MPG I am trying to improve gas mileage on the vehicle below. Vehicle: 91 Ranger 4x4 Xtracab, 4.0L, Automatic, 3.73 axle ratio, no A/C. All stock. Tire size: LT215/75R15, all position tread. I am getting about 15-16 mpg "around town/commuting" and up to 20-22 on the freeway. Does anyone have any ideas on improving MPG? I would consider the following: 1. Aerodynamic devices, especially a bed cover or canopy. I removed the previous owners hood deflector (custom fitted type) and mileage improved. 2. Aftermarket computer chips, any good experience out there? I do tow occaisionally, about 2000 lbs. 3. Other engine mods, special plugs, exhaust, etc. One other question: with no a/c, I run windows down alot and the "buffeting" on this truck is very annoying. Can anyone recommend purchasing the window deflectors to improve this? Hopefully it wouldn't hurt mileage. I would like to acheive 18-19/24-25 city/hwy. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any ideas. Thanks! Mark Biederbeck Portland, Oregon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Sep 1997 21:45:57 +0000 From: "Erik J. O'Daniel" Subject: 84 Bronco II charging system The dashboard ammeter is showing a drain, especially when the lights and fan are turned on. But the battery hasn't gone dead and I've had no problem starting the vehicle. A local parts store hooked up their battery/alternator tester and the tester couldn't conduct the test. I can't remember exactly why. (I also got code 55 from the computer but I don't have any specific test to troubleshoot that code. I thought the Mitchell manual was pretty thorough, but...) Anyway, he indicated that I should check all the wiring and such, possibly pull the alternator and bring it in to be tested. I checked what wiring I could. Here's what all I have: Battery shows a bit over 12 volts just sitting there. It shows about the same when the vehicle is running. (Haynes indicated a battery in a running vehicle should indicate 14-15 volts?) I get a reading of 12 volts at the Battery terminal on the alternator, and twelve volts at the Ground terminal. The Ground terminal doesn't have any wiring going from it to ground and the wiring diagram doesn't really indicate that it should. Is it grounded because it's bolted to the head or engine block? I don't know if I can test anything at the Field and Stator terminals on the alternator, so I haven't messed with them except to check the connections. I replaced the regulator and nothing changed. So: bad battery or bad alternator? Thank you. This configuration gives me a very long wheelbase and I expected the ride to be rough, but on uneven freeway pavement I was surprised at how rough it really is, esp. at speeds over 55 mph. Question: can I improve the ride by installing good shocks, say KYB gas shocks. Any advice welcome. Thanks. >> Al Spangler, I have installed KYB Gas-Adjust shocks on three of my previous vehicles with excellent results. I haven't had the KYB's on my '92 F-150 4x4. Because of price and availability, I went with the Monroe Gas Magnums. They have a 60-day ride free guarentee. I'm still happy with them three years and 35k miles later. I currently have 155K miles on it and it's still going strong. I've replaced: tires, brakes, shocks at 89K timing belt at 120K TPS sensor plugs twice and plug wires once I currently have a sporadic problem with the clutch not disengaging fully and, I think, a bad ABS module (brake and abs lights are on). I'd probably opt for the 4.0 V6 for the extra power but the 2.3L 4 cyl has done well by me. It still gets ~25 mpg overall and burns about 1 qt of oil in 3000 miles. Bottom line - I've loved it - good mileage - trouble free and very low maintenance. My only complaints are no power steering so a lot of grunt is required at low speed. I'd also probably get the extended cab for the extra cab space (although I understand the 98's are a bit larger).
