I agree. The test that I would like to see is a one on one with two
identical vehicles the only difference being the engines. Right now it
couldn't be done with the pickups but all some magazine has to do is get
ahold of last year's van with the 460 and the shootout is on.

My personal engine grunt test is pulling the boat out of the water and up a
steep, slippery ramp with the 2,500 pound Camper on the truck. I don't
like to rev the engine much and the 460 does a fine job here. I don't like
the idea of having to rev the Ford V10 to pull everything up the ramp and
in this case I'd almost prefer Dodge's V10 since it makes 400 lbs/ft at
1000 RPM. Of course, I still haven't driven the V10 with a manual
transmission yet so who knows...

Can you tell me what parts I need to get from the wrecking yard? I would like
to add Cruise Control to both the 66 F100 and 74 F250, if possible.

On one Sunday afternoon I and my family were involved in a collision that
lead my 1996 explorer to roll over on its side.
I had the dealer tow the vehicle to there body shop, for State Farm to
inspect the damage. State Farm wants to total the vehicle as per my
wishes. Walker Ford wants to fix it. So they ordered a full body without
our written permission. I was told that I would have to pay a restocking
fee of $1.200.00 before Walker Ford would release the vehicle to State
Farm. By the way I am still Paying on the LEASE till the dealer Releases
the vehicle. I contacted FORD MOTOR CO. And They said take it up with the
DEALER. So don't be leave what there brochures say. This has been going
on for a month now, So beware of that lease.......

Subject: 84 Ranger, 2.3 L and HP?

Does anyone know of a relatively cheap way to get more HP out of the 2.3
L 4-cyl? Mine has 170,000 miles on it and is still going strong. I
want a new engine. . . but don't have the $$$ right now. . .I also want
to get the thing repainted because the guy that painted it didn't prep
the surface right and did not remove the trim. . how do you paint a
vehicle without removing the trim? I thought that was part of the deal.
. . i need to contact my brother-in-law about it because he paid for it.
. . anyway, I was just wondering about the HP increases. Is a K&N
> filter worth the money in a 2.3L Ranger? Any other cheap fixes? BTW,
about how much are '87 and newer 4.0L V-6's selling for? Is it very
difficult to swap a 4.0L into a 2.3L? I'd appreciate any responses.
Thanks

To anyone who has had the same symptoms or can give me some pointers
on this engine. I just purchased this truck and did a tune-up on it - =
changed the spark
plug wires also but still runs ruff. It has 110k =
miles on it. It seems to run fine
in acceleration but under normal running it runs ruff. It also is =

getting low gas mileage - 15 mpg.

Why pay the big bucks? Patronize a local muffler shop, and have them put
on 3" pipe from the cat back, with a Flowmaster in line. Much less $,
same results. The cat will cut most of the noise, though. Try to have
them let you fire it up with the cat only, you may be surprised. On my
'91 F-250 460, I almost didn't need a muffler at all.

Almost any quality Mud & Snow (M/S) tire should do what you want. Each
person will have their own personal favorites, but they are all pretty
good. A M/S tire isn't very noisy, will provide decent traction on dry
pavement, and still provide traction for light off road excursions, and,
of course, light snow.

Subject: Ranger Power Steering Pump

Greetings,

The power steering pump on my 94 Ranger (3.0L V6, 60K miles) has begun to
make a groaning/growling sound. No, it's not belt slippage, and it does
it at all rpm and regardless of whether the truck is turning, driving
straight, or simply sitting at idle.

I changed the fluid, filling and draining several times to get as much of
the old fluid as possible. It made no difference in the sound. The old
fluid had not darkened and did not smell burned.

On the subject of heat in the fluid, I have not found a cooler on the
truck. Is there an *effective* cooler available somewhere? I am concerned
about cutting and splicing the hoses to fit one in. Does anyone know what
kind of pressures the system utilizes?

Is there any cure, or am I looking at a new pump? Is it likely that it is
a heat induced problem? It does get rather warm here in South Central
Texas, and lacking a cooler...

Any suggestions will be appreciated,

Fred Wise

Good Morning,=20

I own an 87' Ranger Extended cab that I wish to convert to a 4X4, I =
do not wish to buy another truck that is already 4X4 for centamental =
reasons ie, we've been together for 10 years and 210K miles. I recentlly =
bought a set of MT 16x8 wheels for it as the old tires were bald and I =
didn't want to waste money on a new set of tires that I would not =
utilize in it's new 4X4 scheme. So please advise me as to what tires to =
buy. I am not fond of massive lifts, and prefer lifts only for =
situations that require them. In other words if I could fit 285-75-16s =
in the fender wells with the addition of cut out flares and still have =
ample travel and clearence I would be satisfied. My goal is stealthy =
functionallity. The truck is currently used as a daily driver and would/ =
will see weekly off road use. Most of the race trucks I see are =
surprisingly low slung with massive amounts of travel. Having raced =
motocross and desert for most of my life I like the idea of long travel =
suspensions that suck up the rough stuff yet retain a reasonable center =
of gravity. =20
