We have a '92 Sport 2D, 2WD Explorer, with about 82K on it.There is a
newsgroup specifically for Ford Explorers, do a search for Explorer.
The early Explorers have a reputation for losing trannys right about 70K
miles or so, and the A/C condensor is a weak point, usually it's been
replaced by now. There are a few other complaints, like a vibration at
about 60-75 mph, that won't go away except by luck, despite the best
efforts of Ford and a multitude of front-end shops around the country.
Otherwise, they are actually quite competent little SUVs. The V8 was a
much later addition.
Explorers remain in high demand, so costs can be high, although on the
real early ones this might not be so evident.
We like ours, and intend to keep it until it falls apart. It's my wife's
daily driver, and she's a fairly aggressive driver, and it holds up to
her driving style pretty well.
SO far, we've had to replace: A/C condensor, A/C hoses, intake maifold
gasket, front brake disks (our fault), battery (normal maintenance),
shocks, tires, and normal maintenance items. Fairly reliable, really.

Dale, and the rest of the group...I realize the desire to protect us all
from a disaster of this type, but this is a hoax.
It is not possible for email to carry a virus of any type. (At least,
not yet.)
Before this type of warning is sent out, a little checking should be
done.

Try using the popular metal polishing compound, Brasso.

Use a soft cloth and buff with it, just like a rubbing compund for paint -
then wipe it off once dry with another clean towel. this works great for
taking the scratches out of almost any kind of plastic or metal - it saved
one of my watch faces one time. It may take several times to get out the
deep scratches, but it worked on mine.

If anyone is interested, check out the following site in the case of
a suspected virus. This will avoid sending hoax info and clogging up
the list.

I test drove my first powerstroke Saturday! NICE! It was an XLT 4x4
and had a 5 speed with a 4.10 limited slip. Needless to say it had
b*lls the size of church bells! You stepped down on it and it climbed
up in speed very nicely. I can see my '93s diesel is quite a bit
different. That direct injection must make a huge difference. It
sounds neat at idle also. I would have loved to hitch up my trailer
and test it that way. From what has been said on this list, I am sure
it would do just fine. It may be a while until I get one. My wife
says "a new house comes first."

My brother in law got one recently. He paid $500 over invoice,
and the dealer got to keep the holdback. The problem was that
there are so few of these left (so he was told) that there was not
much to choose from. He ended up getting a loaded XLT in order to
get the options he really wanted. I think it came just under $30k.

Ryan,

have the same gears and all so they probably are the same.

Hard to diagnose w/o more detailed info, but in the interest of getting a
dialog started...

Is the overdrive not working or the lock-up clutch? The reason I ask is
the effects are similar. (Forgive me if this is too basic a question.) The
way to tell is this: Hold a steady speed at 50 mph or so, and then goose
the accelerator, not enough to force a downshift though. If the clutch is
not locking, you will then have an immediate rpm increase of 200-300 not
tied to road speed. If the clutch is locked, then the revs will build only
with road speed.

If you decide it is the clutch, then the first place to look is the coolant
temperature switch (different than the dash gage sending unit). This
switch delays lock-up until the coolant warms somewhat.

A blown fuse is not indicated. If it were a fuse, you problem would be
permanent, not intermittant. Can you provide more info? Is this a problem
when cold? Hot? Does it randomly shift in and out? O.K. one day and not
the next?

Hope this at least gets you started.

Mike J.

Yes. In the earlier models they offered a 5.0L, in the newer models they
offered the 4.6L.

Greetings. Damn. My own page comes back to bite me in the butt ;-)

Yeah, made this conversion on our Saturn (twice, as the first time the
idiot-mechanic ripped it out because "we can't pass your inspection if
you have a car safer than the way it came from the factory"... so I
had to chew the moron out and do it again... they leave it alone now).
It works. And, yes, you can do it so it always works (not just when the....
