I have had several manual transmissions that you could start up the truck and in -20c weather you could let the clutch out in neutral and drive down the road due to the thick gear oil dragging the shafts. Park it in 1st or R gear, it always seems able to shift out of gear. Don't use you E-Brake in the winter, ever! Darned things often stick. Push the clutch to start the engine. Takes a lot of load off the starter. If the engine doesn't start in the first 15 second try, wait 30 seconds and try again. The battery and starter will be warmer this time. You have to figure out what the engine needs for pumps/choke + throttle. Once the engine idles smoothly, slowly let out the clutch but keep a foot on the brake, like I said, it can move. Don't get out unless you are positive the vehicle cannot roll away, I don't recommend getting out at all. 30-60 second warm up and drive away easily. I have used synthetic in my transfer case and notice it is much freer in cold weather. Should work nice in a manual transmission as well. The reason you leave the transmission in 1st or reverse is that these have the lowest ratio, making it hardest for gravity to turn over the motor. If you have to park on a hill you could even use low range if yours is a 4x4. If your engine compression is low, chock the wheels or turn them to the curb. Conversely, use the higher gears if you ever have to bump start the engine. 2nd will work on a paved hill but 3rd or 4th are needed on gravel. Have fun! Takes the same steering box and I have had it out. Put the penetrating oil to the 3 bolts on the box side a day ahead of time. Oil them up again the next day and use the powerbar on them. The spacer inside the frame tends to rust and these bolts can loosen up with time, so try breaking them free and retightening them, or look for the box moving on the frame when someone wiggles the wheel. The ragjoint often loosens up, the universals rust and bind up or get play, and the wierdest steering problem that I have ever had was the steering arm had play on the spline on my Bronco. Why? I don't know but I had to replace it and the box. Rebuilt one was $250cdn but I have only ever reinstalled used ones. Once I removed the chip all would be OK, cept for the occasionall light flickering. I tried several different Jet chips (With the compan's help) but finally gave up I sent it back to the seller (NOT JET) and they lost it/went bankrupt and I was out $250 (OUCH). It was no fun trying to remove the ford chip assembly in -0 degree weather along side the road. I did suggest that they build a jumper chip so that IF theirs went bad you snap if the fake one and it restored the eng to stock configuration without alot of work.. They said "good idea" and thats as far as it goes. I reasearched it myself and changed out the O2 sensor and have not had a check engine light in 30,000. So do I try it again? I have done this a couple times and it is not that difficult. There is a pipe plug (bolt) on the back of the torque converter that drains it. You know about dropping the pan. The filter is nothing but a screen on the C6. It is cheap but you can just rinse it if you want. You can seal the pan up with a new gasket or just use RTV if you wish. The C6 takes about 12 liters or US quarts. Put 8 in and start the engine. Let it idle a bit and add 2 more, check the level as it warms up. Top up as you need to, may not take all 12. There was a V-8 conversion for Miatas released, called the Monster I believe, and it used a 302 HO engine from a late model Mustang. Only changed needed in the outward appearance of the Miata was a slight bulge in the middle of the hood, to clear the upper intake manifold. I don't exactly remember the mechanical changes, it was in a 'Hot Rod' type magazine a little after the Miata became popular. == FTE: Uns*bscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Sep 1998 09:22:14 -0700 From: "Gerald L. This truck has dual tanks. Lately I have not been able to run all of the fuel out of the rear tank. My experience is that on a long drive the rear tank will effectively run out of gas when there is still slightly 1/4 of a tank of fuel left. I promptly switch to the front tank to keep on truckin'. Funny thing is that later in the day or even on the same drive I sometimes am able to switch back to the rear tank and complete consumption of the remaining 1/4 of a tank. Sounds like a breather problem but I have pulled over after experiencing the early "shut down" and removing the cap doesn't help, no sucking noise can be heard. Can anyone give me a hint as to what is going on here? Thanks in advance. Right now it pulls to the left and bounces all over the road at freeway speeds. The tires are OK but not great. I'm going to check tire pressures, wheel balance, alignment, and shocks. Does anybody have any alignment recommendations or any suggestions about other things to check? My friend says that this is just the way they are. Somebody else said that 1500 lb over the rear axle would fix the problem. In any case, I thought I'd ask if anybody out there has a van which works better at freeway speeds. Thanks.
