I've been lurking for a few weeks. Nice list. I need to confess that I am not an enthusiast of that gas sucking, wallet draining, chunk of 1994 Ford F-250 Supercab iron that could squish my Miata in a single bound. However, SHE *is* which relates directly to two flea-bitten equines that can take 10 lbs of hay and turn it into 20 lbs of manure. So, SHE wants fog lights and while I'm tempted to toss on a set of $20 Walmart specials somehow it would spoil the ambiance and probably not make HER happy - -- a bad thing. Also, I really don't see how to easily mount a set on the front of the truck. Some of the air dams in the pictorials on the web site look pretty nifty. Any recommendations for air dams or other thoughts? And remember -- this isn't just a question -- it's a Christmas present. I appreciate your time. I have adjusted the timing from >the factory setting of 8 BTDC to 12BTDC with >almost no reduction in pinging. The engine has >plenty of power and will not ping under full throttle >or when the vacuum advance is disconnected. Yo Dave: Your last observation (no pinging when vacuum advance disconnected) is the key. All Ford distributors w/ vac advance have an adjustable diaphragm in the vac advance canister. You can insert a 1/8" Allen-type hex key into the vacuum hose nipple on the canister and engage a screw that controls spring tension against the diaphragm. Clockwise rotation reduces spring tension, which increases the sensitivity to vacuum. Counter-clockwise rotation increases spring tension, which decreases the sensitivity to vacuum. Since you have observed reduced pinging w/ no vac advance, you want to reduce the sensitivity (turn counter-clockwise). You can try 2-3 turns and then test drive to determine if it's effective. You can repeat the adjust/test (trial & error) procedure until you find the setting that works. FYI: The vac advance diaphragms I have experience w/ have a range of about 14-17 turns from all the way in to all the way out. You can determine your current setting by rotating the screw all the way in (clockwise) and counting the number of turns. If you count the turns from where you are to all the way in, then count the turns from all the way in to all the way out and compare the numbers, that'll give you an idea where you are. As you adjust the spring tension on the diaphragm, it seems like the change in vacuum sensitivity is pretty much linear. BTW: You should return your static (initial) timing to the factory spec before you start adjusting the vac advance. Good luck w/ your van. Dave R. I'm glad your better-half has good taste...at least in trucks. BTW, try pulling those two flea-bitten cabayos (I think that's the spanish word for it) w/the Miata, or maybe the 10 lbs of hay is more suited to that car...or the 20 lbs....ahh forget it. Now w/that off my chest, is there room to fit lights behind the grille? I could fit some in my '87 but don't know about the '94's. I do like the factory air dam ones on the Lightnings. But if you go aftermarket spend the money on a good quality set. You'll find plenty in any off-road mag from companies like Dick Cepek, PIAA, Hella and others. Hi All, Because our (Ford trucks) outside mirrors are so well attached, my door was ruined, when someone, mad at me, used the sturdiness of the attachment, like a gymnast, with a kung fu kick. A tight squeeze between trees, too close to a pole, etc., would do the same. Is there a break-away mirror? I have a 89' Clubwagon with the C6 3speed tranny. My question is, how difficult is it to drain the torque converter, and with everything drained what is the correct amount of fluid to put back in?? The two manuals I have, seam to contradict each other. Thanks in advance.. During a coolant change, on my 460 (before this summer), I bought a flushing kit from prestone. I installed it, per the instructions, and flushed the radiator, engine, etc. I located two square drain plugs (near the exhaust manifold outlets), and knowing they were block drain plugs, decided to pull them. At least a gallon of flush water came out of them (garden hose disconnected). I recommend that if you're block has one, pull it, you'd be surprised how much water is still in that block. If you don't have one, I recommend a 60-65% coolant/water ratio, since it will be diluted. Just my 2 cents, but yes, if the block doesn't have the drain plugs, yes, there's still plenty of flushing water in the block. Hope this helps. I have noticed on a couple of mine that they did not have drain plugs. When I finally broke down and bought a Reman tranny it came with a new converter that had a drain plug in it. Either way you'll have to take the little cover off the lower part of the bellhousing and turn the motor over by hand. While turning it look at the converter for a plug. If you are lucky there will be one there. I can't remember how much fluid they hold though. Your best bet would be to put a few quarts in and keep checking as you add more while it's running and you run it through the gears a few times. - -----Original Message----- From: Michael Parrott To: 80-96-list Date: Tuesday, September 15, 1998 9:27 PM Subject: FTE 80-96 - New: Have Tranny Question....
