Bob, I have "been there done that". I must have changed timing chains on
every V8 I have ever owned, mostly after they jumped. None ever broke.
I was never able to tell "excessive play" in any. In the 1970s V8s I
would advise looking for an excuse to change the timing after 60,000 miles.
After 120,000 mile don't look for an excuse, just do it!

That seemed to be the life of them. Usually the chain wore a bit but
the nylon gear was all chewed up. Replaced them with roller chain and
never did it again.

My car has the 4.6 OHC in it and now with over 130,000 miles on it
I should be replacing those 3 foot long monsters but keep finding
excuses not to.... Not good...

As the owner of a couple hydraulic and many mechanial linkaged trucks
over the years, I say keep what you have got.

The external cylinder hydraulic clutch from a later model Ford "looks"
like it would be direct swap if you had all the pieces and it works nice
when it is working but it comes with its own problems. First of all, the
under dash mount tends to break causing the firewall to flex and you to
lose clutch travel. If either cylinder leaks it is designed to be replaced
as a $$$ complete unit. If it wasn't so much work I'd trade you for the
hydraulic clutch on my 87.
