I had some starting problems and a bit of the smoke like you describe. My first guess was deposits in the injectors or pump. I started adding a pint of Marvel Mystery Oil as a fuel additive in every fill up. The problem stopped after a couple of tanks. Other diesel fuel treatment can probably work as well. Just so long as it cleans and lubricates the pump and injectors. During those first couple of tanks I actually added a quart to each tank. It's worth a try before you start pulling out the injectors or looking at servicing the injector pump. My 1985 F 250, with a 351 modified Cleveland (1978), is vapor locking = in the 95+ NM heat. Anyone with experience/ideas would be appreciated. =20 All these suggestions are good but if the gas is already boiling when = it gets to the fuel filter it is getting heated a long way before the = engine > compartment. Have a look all the way back along the fuel line to the = tank. I think you will find that the exhaust is heating the fuel line either = by a leak in the muffler or the pipes. Ford is famous for running fuel, = brake > and electrical lines all together along the chassis. Nothing wrong = with that until something like a leak in the exhaust happens. Air flow = through the engine compartment should be sufficient to keep the fuel from = boiling even in the hottest weather. Remember your engine is operating at = about 180=B0-220=B0 even in the winter. Keep the fuel cool from the tank to = the firewall and you should have no further problems. I found this out the very hard way (ever try getting a ride on Hwy. 84 between Muleshoe and Clovis at 2:00 am?) == FTE: Unsubscribe and posting info www.ford-trucks.com/faq.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jun 1998 08:22:56 -0600 From: "Smeins, Larry" Subject: RE: FTE 80-96 - Vapor Lock? What you are experiencing is a problem common at higher altitudes during high temperatures. First get the fuel lines and filter as far away from the engine heat as possible. Make sure the recirculating fuel line is open and working. You do have a recirculating fuel system don't you? Insulate the fuel lines and filter if possible. Don't use fuels with alcohol or methanol in the summer. A common fix on motorhomes, vapor lock is a big problem for them, is to place an electric fuel pump at the tank end. Sometimes adding a gallon of diesel to a tank of gas will help. Not recommended for catalytic equipped engines. Archer" Subject: Re: FTE 80-96 - Vapor Lock I used to own a 1982 Ford F-250 with a 351 Windsor, and it also had a series vapor lock problem. The only thing I did to correct the problem was I rerouted the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carburetor away from the engine the best I could, and I started using a better grade of gasoline. I never had any more problems! The problem you describe sounds exactly like what mine was, and still is, doing. Could it be something with the suspension? If anybody has ANY ideas, they would be appreciated! If so, get some one else to do it while you investigate from one side to the other.. If it is a frame problem, you may have to set the parking brake, then slowly let out on the clutch,(stick?). As you slowly increase the throttle, see if you can re-create the noise this way. Either way, if unsuccessful, try turning the wheels to both sides to attempt the re-creation. If the wheel turning works, jack up the front-end, put it on a good pair of jack stands and work each tire up and down, then left and right, this could reflect bad steering components. Good luck!
