Subject: FTE 80-96 - Ranger hesitation-follow up

I posted a question about two weeks ago about my 94 ranger. For afew weeks (maybe a month) it has had the tendency to stutter (misfire?) upon hard acceleration. After listing that I had repalaced most of the obvious electrical stuff, like plugs, wires, air filter, o2 sensors, and fuel fulter. I also ran dry gas,etc I got a few responses that I may need to replace the "Throttle Position Sensor"

I need some more advice. Is this something I can do myself, or is it a dealer only item? Where it this sensor located. What does it look like, etc.

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Subject: FTE 80-96 - Leaking fan Clutch

I just replaced the water pump on my '90 F150 4.9L six. I noticed that
the fan clutch was leaking a little bit of silicone (I think) around the
thermal spring on the front. Is this bad? The clutch seems to work
normally and turn freely. I heard somewhere that when replacing either
the pump or clutch it is a good idea to replace the other. Why is this?
If one goes out of balance or something, does it damage the other? By
the way, it took two tries with "new" ($35 made in China) pumps from a
discount auto store before I got one that didn't leak at the bearing
vent hole.

Has anyone else noticed, that after a particularly damp night,
when you release the emergency brake you sometimes get
sprayed with a small amount of water.

Could it be condensation on the spring or a leak. I am concerned
it could corrode the emergency brake mechanism inside the cab.

Any comments, solutions?

Craig,
Here is some information I found on the web for the
TPS(Throttle Position Sensor). I don't have EFI on my
bronco but do on my mustang. So this info will help me
too. :-)

The throttle position sensor is on the side of the throttle body, it's a
little black box with a 3 contact connector on it. One is ground(the middle one)
and the outer two pins are full throttle and idle contacts. Only the idle contacts
are used on sticks, automatics use idle and full throttle contacts. There are
two screws on the switch so you can adjust it, they rarely go bad. With an
ohmmeter, rotate the switch until the idle contact is closed with the throttle
closed. It should open when you just barely push the gas pedal, telling the
computer that the engine isn't idling anymore. You can't adjust the full throttle
contacts separately, so you're stuck with however they work if you have an
automatic. If your car lurches a little while coasting in gear towards a red light,
it may be that the TPS is not quite right and the computer is switching from
idle to running. This can make your car lurch a little because the fuel is shut
off when you are coasting in gear to save gas. The switch is opening and closing,
turning the fuel on and off. To replace the switch, simply remove the two screws,
unplug it, and replace it with the new one.

Unfortunately, pretty much every manufacturer has had paint peeling issues at one time. Here are some of the cars I've seen having paint issues:

'85 H*nda Accord (roof and trunklid)
'89 N*ssan 240SX (trunklid)
'86 Ford Ranger (mine's pretty much all rust now.)
'87 Toy*ta Celica (clearcoat disintegrated along sides)
'82 B*W 3-series (clearcoat everywhere)
'84 Ch*vy Blazer (roof)

I've also spotted a couple of early 90's D*dge Intrepids with paint peeling.

Various body and paint shops offer me excuses about why the manufacturer didn't paint correctly. The Ford-warranty shop that repainted my friend's '90 F-150 said that sometimes Ford runs out of primer and/or gets in a hurry and doesn't put enough (or any) primer on some of the trucks. (I'll take that with some salt, of course.)

I've seen Ford's with paint peeling, but it seems I've seen A LOT more Ch#vy's
peeling. Good thing he already took delivery of it, being as GM's work force is so
un*stable.
