Gues you need a 460 though to chirp tires:-) Last fluid change I did, I converted to synthetic ATF.There is no F-type offered,I used the Dextron 3. I also change the transfer case over shortly afterwards to the synthetic.I have the towing pkg and external cooler, and the fluid capacity for the trans s 17.8 qts.By draining the torque convertor using the little 1/8"NPT plug provided on the torque convertor(accessed through the rubber plug able to get 15-1/2 qts of the new fluid in it.Probably could have oten 17.8 in it if I would have used an air hose to empty the cooler and lines out. NOTE: The transfer case fluid looked really BAD!! I thought the 94 fluid would be slightly discolored, but it resembled ATFthat had run in a trans for over 100K!! If you have a newer 4x4, you want to check his out ASAP! My Bronco hasn't seen severe use,but think about it: the 1356 transfer case has no external cooler so gets the heat from engine and trans with no way to cool itself, short of heat dissipation through the aluminum housing.IMHO,this makes the transfercase even a better candidate for a synthetic lube,as the heat resistance and resistance to carbonizing of synthetics is far superior to "natural" lubricants. Not to mention the cleaning characteristics. The fluid in the transfer case was so bad I'll probably change it again in a couple of months.Should be good to go then.If memory serves(which usually don't:-) the TC capacity was around 3 qts or a bit less. I used Castrol Synthetic;it was 4.99 qt.Try to find it cheaper someplace else if you do this.Wal-Mart was a buck cheaper a qt on the Mobil 1 I use. Big deal if you're gonna be buyin 20-some quarts.I did the synthetic on the 85 transfer case as well. The stuff that came outta it was unrecognizable as ATF;totally black.Hope this helps. And thats a mighty big IF. You might as well buy the whole engine (turbo and all) while your there, because they may not sell just the turbo off the engine...these engines are a real hot item. Usually a waiting list (at least in my area) Turbo on old engine: Do a compression test to see what kind of shape it's in. I went thru all of this about 2 years ago with my '87. The people selling the turbo kits will tell you that it should go on a newer (or low mileage) engine. I finally gave in, had the engine completely remanufactured with a NEW turbo kit. Pricey but in the long run it is so much better 'bout everything else ;) Old turbo's: I have had some tell me not to use used turbo's. Something about not trusting the turbines or bearings. Probably the same nonsense you hear C6: Well....I've got one. Tough trany, but no overdrive. Major drag even w/ 3.55's. Doing some research on a conversion to the manual 5-speed. Any takers? I have had real good luck with BFG/AT's in the.... To access the rest of this feature you must be a logged in Registered User Of Ford Truck Enthusiasts
